The Wellness of YOU! - # 48

posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |

What Makes Us Fat?

In our article yesterday about your nutrition and weight loss program we talked about how our bodies do a great job of burning energy, but that one of the reasons why we are fatter than we should be is because we take in more food (energy) than we need.

Folks, we eat for a reason. We eat protein to help regenerate lean tissue. We eat carbohydrates to give us energy or to provide some fat to protect our organs.

But, the problem comes in when we have leftovers — and I’m not talking about the kind in your refrigerator — it’s the leftovers in our bodies from the food we eat that we don’t need. That’s where the fat comes from, folks. It’s as simple as that.

Yep! If we eat it and we don’t need it, then the extra food is converted to fat and that fat gets stored into fat cells — and those cells really like each other so they huddle up together and become fat tissue. While women have more of this tissue in their lower body (until menopause), men usually have it around their waistline.

We already know that everyone needs some fat to survive — as we said above, we need some fat to protect our organs. But when we got too many of these fat cells, the body starts to put them in places like the liver cells, muscle cells, and heart cells. Doctors are telling us those are the wrong places for those cells. Having them there is dangerous.

“It’s very easy to gain weight. Any kind of energy ingested (food or drink) and not used, is generally stored as fat. What we eat is fuel, and it’s made out of fat, protein and carbohydrates,” says Dr. Jeanine Albu, an endocrinologist at the Obesity Research Center at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. “We burn the fuel we need for energy, but everything that is not burned gets turned into triglycerides — basically fat.”

We all know that it is dangerous to gain too much weight. Every year, almost 400,000 Americans die from the obesity caused by poor nutrition or lack of proper exercise. Being overweight can cause heart disease and diabetes. Plus, there’s all the other problems — like not being able to move our arms and legs properly, getting arthritis and losing sleep because of sleep apnea.

Many health issues are also being attributed to increased fat gain around the stomach area, and some nutritional experts now believe that waist circumference may be an actual indicator of future health problems. “Fatty tissue stored around the stomach and abdomen carry a greater risk than fat located in the lower body around the butt and thighs,” says nutritionist Anne Collins.

People who are carrying around extra weight would feel a lot better about themselves and their overall wellbeing if they didn’t have that weight. The problem is that if you give those folks a choice to change the behavior that put the fat on to begin with, most people just won’t do it. They would rather continue to feel lousy, and put themselves at great risk for life-threatening diseases, than to change their lifestyle.

Which brings us right back to our addiction to bad food. (Read our articles on this subject at these links:)

In the next article or two, I’m going to talk about some of the specifics about what is really causing the problems around our waistlines. I’m going to talk about what we are doing to get fat. I’m going to do this because there just might be someone who will be helped in their nutrition and weight loss efforts if I literally spell it out.

Until then, remember to follow a good-fat — good-carb diet and stay with your regular exercise.
