The Wellness of YOU! - # 32
posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |And Still More About Sugar and Weight Loss
Sorry I didn’t get an article out to you yesterday. I may be able to make it up to you and get two articles out today. We don’t want to fall behind in our wellness, fitness and weight loss routine, do we?
Anyway — onward with some more discussion about our need for sugar and other simple carbohydrates.
One of the things in life that is way too easy for most people — is to gain weight.
I know, there are some who do have trouble with that, but most of us can put on extra pounds without even trying. That spare tire around our middle didn’t require us to go out and buy a bunch of diet books to put it there — it just happened! One day we looked down and there it was! It came out of nowhere, right?
Here’s the catch folks — we have all told ourselves that it’s just too hard to eat healthy food. And the reason we’ve told ourselves that — the reason we have convinced ourselves that this is a true statement — is that if we didn’t believe that we’d have no other choice but to face the fact that the foods we enjoy and crave all the time are the very foods that are making us fat.
Here’s another quote from one of Jonni Good’s readers…
From Linda (personal details have been edited out to protect her privacy):
“Hello Jonni
I enjoyed reading your book as it was written in a manner that made me feel like I was reading a letter from a friend. You made many valid points and I do agree that we need to be responsible for the choices we make. I found your method of thinking about our thoughts quite interesting.
I read your book through all in one sitting and so hope to be able to read it slower next time.”
And, here’s another quote directly from her website:
Let’s look at some of the numbers:
One Milky Way candy bar has 270 calories.
If you’re a woman with a normal (meaning fairly sedentary) American lifestyle, you can maintain your weight with about 1800 calories a day. Any more calories than that, and you gain weight, any fewer calories and you’ll lose weight. This is the basic information that makes any diet work (or not).
Your Milky Way is, therefore, about 1/6th of your daily caloric needs. More importantly, one Milky Way and one Hershey bar a day will add a pound a week to your butt, unless you reduce the calories you get from real food by the same amount. If you just eat one candy bar a day and don’t cut back on real food, it will take you two weeks to gain a pound. But don’t worry - you will gain weight.
One Costco giant muffin can add up to more than 600 calories - three muffins a day would give you enough calories to maintain your weight, while clogging your arteries from all that fat..
Imagine it - the three muffins would maintain your weight if you ate absolutely nothing else. Fat chance!
Is it any wonder that fewer and fewer people can crowd into an American Elevator?

Most people won’t sit down and eat only a candy bar, or a giant muffin or a nice big brownie with a scoop of ice cream all by itself and not have any other food during the day. No! Those things are always eaten in addition to our regular meals.
Well, that’s better than not eating real food at all, but it will cause you to gain weight. Simple carbs with no other food is heading you down the road to serious trouble.
How often have you heard someone say, “There isn’t anything else to eat if I don’t eat sugar laden foods and other simple carbs.” If they say that to you, and that is all they eat, please tell them to make a doctor appointment right away. They’re going to need help soon.
Think about it.
I’m going to try and get another article done today. If not, I’ll be back tomorrow with some more information to help you with your wellness, fitness and weight loss goals.
Until then, remember to follow a good-fat — good-carb diet and stay with your regular exercise.
