The Wellness of YOU!! –# 23
posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |Those Snack Attacks Can Get You Down!
Yesterday we wrote a brief article on how to tell the difference between real hunger and cravings. We talked about how being able to distinguish between the two was vital to your wellness, fitness, and weight loss program.
Today let’s expand on that a bit by looking at how good fats can help you to combat those snack attacks.
When we’re trying to get rid of that bulge around the middle we will often blame fat (that’s “fat” in a general sense — meaning all fats). I’m not suggesting that’s entirely false, only partly so. It’s learning the difference between GOOD fats and BAD fats that will make a difference.
We talked about one of those BAD fats last week — the trans fatty acids that are in those crackers, cookies and cakes we have grown accustomed to eating. You definitely need to get those items out of your kitchen and pantry. It’s a lot easier to do that now that food labels will tell you if there’s any of that nasty stuff in the product.
But all fats are not bad fats. I’m sure I’ve mentioned these foods before — olive oil, fish, avocados, and nuts all contain good fats. When you include proper amounts of these foods in your diet, along with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, you’ll see that you’ll feel full and satisfied and can easily resist the urge to snack. You’ll also avoid overeating — one of the major contributors to our “around the middle bulges”.
One of the other mistakes we tend to make is picking up those “fat free” products when we shop. The next time you’re out at the super market, pick up a package of “fat-free” cookies. Don’t buy them, just take a look at the label. Check out the sugar content. Check out the list of ingredients. How many of those do you recognize?
The key is this ….
One of the best snacks you can rely on are raw carrots or celery sticks. One of our favorite snacks is to put some peanut butter on a celery stick. Another good celery stick spread is soynut butter. It tastes good and it has about 30% less fat than peanut butter. Some folks like cream cheese as a spread too, but be careful — read the label — watch out for sugar content and trans fats. There are some cream cheese products that are healthy, but you need to choose carefully.
If you want some salt with your crunch try some baked tortilla chips. Read the label to make sure you’re getting some with very little fat. These have a good bit of fiber too. Dip them in some guacamole for a nice tasty snack. The guacamole is also a source of GOOD fat. Don’t scoff the whole bag of chips though — just eat a few — moderation is the key!
