The Wellness of You! # 226 - More on Stress and Lifestyle

posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |

Last week we talked about stress, and one of the things I recommended to you was to add meditation to your daily lifestyle. Believe me when I say that meditation is, by far, one of the best things we can do to keep ourselves healthier and happier.

Today, let’s talk about a few other things we can do for ourselves to relieve the negative effects of stress.

weight loss, nutrition, health, diet, breakfast

A healthy diet and physical exercise are vital ingredients to any stress reducing program. Let’s take a look at the effect of a healthy diet on stress. Eating foods that are nutritious, that is, low in fat and sugar, we’ll be able to keep a much more balanced life. Avoiding foods that are high in sugar, reducing the amount of caffeine you consume, and eating plenty of foods that contain fiber, you will find that your body will be better equipped to handle stress.

Avoid smoking and alcohol as they both cause excess stress. Alcohol and nicotine act as stimulants and you need to be calm, not stimulated, when stressful situations enter your life. The chemicals involved in smoking and drinking will cause nervousness and jittery feelings. These will work against you when you’re trying to remain calm.

Another important factor in reducing stress is to get adequate physical exercise. For example, there are studies that show how employees who take part in an exercise program are more productive and have fewer problems with sick and unproductive days. Exercise is also a great way to distract you when you’re feeling stressed. What is even more important, exercise strengthens your heart and increases your circulation so your body is better able to maintain control when stress is lurking.

If you’ve become bored with exercise (and that happens a lot) add some variety to what you’re doing. Find a friend to share this with you. Keep it interesting.

Start slowly. People will sometimes give up on an exercise program because they start out with a program that’s too strenuous. After the first day, their muscles are stiff and sore and they abandon the exercise. Starting slow and building up to a longer and more advanced program will keep you interested — and you won’t have all the aches and pains.

Another good form of stress management is yoga or Tai Chi which include stretching, breathing and muscle relaxation. Yoga has been found to be effective in treating conditions that are caused by stress such as anxiety headaches, high blood pressure, and asthma.

And, finally, along with exercise, do bring meditation into your daily life.
