This blog is going to change it's focus. I'm going to be posting my Memoir/Novel called, Lost and Found, in a serialized fashion. I call it a 'Memoir/Novel' because it is the true story of my youth, but I've changed all names, including my own. There is a Table of Contents in the left sidebar. Just click the links to read from the beginning or to read any part you may have missed. I have added a New Chapter Notice Form on the right. Just leave your first name and email address and I'll let you know directly when there's a new chapter. I'd also love to hear your comments.

The Wellness of You! # 225 – Lifestyle and Stress

posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |

One of the major factors to improving our over-all health is to find ways to live without so much stress in your life. We in the Western cultures are finding that our fast-paced lives filled with frustrations, irritations and worries result in shorter tempers and the tendency to explode into anger, followed by increased risks for serious health issues.

There are several studies that have shown that the emotion of anger can double the risk of heart attack. In fact, those heart attacks tended to occur just two hours after the episode of anger or rage.

Stress does a lot of things to us. One of those is how it can affect our ability to remember those stressful times. When we’re under stress we have an increased level of the stress hormone cortisol, which cuts off glucose, the brain’s fuel, then messes up the way our neurotransmitters process information, thereby making it difficult to dig up those existing memories. Stress can also release adrenaline, which then causes blood sugar levels to soar coupled with pumping up your blood pressure followed by an increased heart rate. Not good stuff to be happening to you, right?

So what can you do?

Learn how to meditate and bring the practice of meditation into your lifestyle. If you don’t get enough sleep you will have low melatonin levels (the sleep hormone). We also know that people who regularly meditate have increased melatonin levels. More sleep makes it easier to handle stressful situation.

I mentioned cortisol above. People who meditate have a decline in the levels of cortisol. People who have a tendency for panic attacks, (associated with extreme stress) have a rise in blood lactate levels, while those levels are quite low in people who make meditation a apart of their daily lifestyle. In fact, a short 10-minute meditation is enough to considerably drop anxiety-caused lactate levels.

And the really cool fact — people who meditate regularly have a biological age twelve years lower than their chronological age. Now that’s major!!
