The Wellness of You! # 224 - Health and Your Work Schedule
posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |Would you do something for me? I’d like you to take a look at your work schedule. I sure do hope it’s not like so many people that I come into contact with — you know the ones I mean — they start work the moment their feet hit the floor in the morning and they don’t stop until they’re so tired they’ll drop if they don’t get to bed. Sure, perhaps that’s not all work time spent on the actual job, but in their minds they’re working just as hard as they would if they were at work.
It’s sad, but true — our world is wracked by sleep deprivation. What’s even sadder — but even truer — is that most people take great pride in how hard they work and how many hours they put in. “Oh, I’m good with that!”, they’ll say, “I can make it all up with a quick power nap!”
Or, they’ll pull up their shoulders, lift their heads up high and brag about how they can get by on no more than four or five hours of sleep a night.
Well, I may have some surprising news for those of you who fit this picture. You are really increasing your health risks in a big way.
In a recent study I read today, it found that men who slept less than five hours a day were two to three times more likely to have a heart attack. The study also found that women who slept less than five hours had an eighty-two percent higher risk for heart disease.
The risk of diabetes also increases drastically in those who don’t get a good amount of sleep each night. This is because you’ll have a much lower insulin sensitivity. Insulin sensitivity is already a huge problem among most of us who live in western cultures due to our unsatisfactory diet and nutrition habits.
And, there’s another thing to think about — and that’s the risk of rapid aging when you don’t get enough rest. It is vital that you get to bed early enough to get a solid seven or eight hours sleep — and you need to be able to fall asleep quickly. There was a study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine that showed that men and women ages fifty-nine and up, who took longer than 30 minutes to fall asleep were twice as likely to die within the next thirteen years.
(I know, the “and up” in the above study does bring up the question, “Would they die anyway?” Perhaps, but there is little doubt that sleep deprivation does accelerate the aging process.)
Nighty-night. I hope you get a good night’s sleep.
