The Wellness of You — #219 — Another Habit?

As mentioned last week, we’re going to be talking about some bad eating habits over the next few weeks — and what to do about them. I know that I sure find myself with some of these habits and would like to know what to do to avoid them. So, while I hope I’m helping you to resolve any of these habits — I also am striving to help myself in the process.

Here’s the bad eating habit for this week —

Speed Eating!

This is one of the sure ways to set yourself up for some serious stomach troubles down the road.

When you gulp your food you tend to take in excess air. That excess air can lead to bloating or gas. Another aspect of fast eating is that you’re not chewing your food properly. You need saliva to break food down. When you eat fast, your saliva doesn’t get a chance to interact with the food and the rest of your digestive tract has to work much harder to break the food down for digestion. This can contribute to indigestion and can leave an excess of acids undigested in your stomach. That acid can lead to stomach ulcers.

Speed-eating also doesn’t give your brain enough time to catch up with your stomach. Your brain needs at least 20 minutes to get the message that your stomach is full. A recent study found that women who ate a meal in 30 minutes ate 10 percent fewer calories compared with those who wolfed a meal down in barely 10 minutes.

The best way to combat speed-eating is to just slow down. Take your time and enjoy your food. Avoid finger foods and instead choose items you have to put on a plate and eat with utensils. Eat foods that you need to take time to chew. Pause often as you eat and drink water throughout your meals.
