The Wellness of You! # 216 — Stress Equals Fat!

posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |

Over the past several weeks, there has been a increased amount of stress in my life. A lot of it has to do with the holiday season which is always a stressful time for me, as I’m sure it is for a many of you. In addition, there was a considerable amount of sweet snacks around most of that time. I also began to notice that my waistline was expanding during this same time frame. Not seriously so, but enough to make me take notice.

When I was looking through some research this morning, I discovered something that I wasn’t aware of — and that is that stress can lay a bunch of fat right smack-dab on your belly. Studies of mice and monkeys show that repeated stress β€” and a high-fat, high-sugar diet β€” stimulate the release of neuropeptide Y, or NPY, causing fat to build up in the abdomen. Sure enough, that’s right where my new fat landed.

This NPY stuff has another thing about it that I don’t like — and that is that it makes you want to eat more — plus it makes you get lazy and lose any desire for physical activity.

I’ve been thinking a lot about stress lately. The number of negative things that it can do to your body, and subsequently your overall health, is devastating. I know that I need to find ways to stay away from situations that cause excess stress. It’s literally, a matter of life and death. I know that there will always be some stress in our lives, but it’s learning how to avoid the unnecessary stresses that is something we can control.

I’m finding one way that can help a great deal, and that is to learn to meditate. I’ve been meditating regularly for many years. However, I still have a poor ability to stay out of places and events that cause additional stress. Stress is deadly and we all need to find ways to decrease it in our lives.

I hope to write more about this in future issues.

I’d like to offer a bit of help to a friend of mine in the United Kingdom who is looking for some help from all of us. Last year, she was diagnosed with and treated for Breast Cancer. Today, she counts herself among the survivors. However, many are not so lucky.

She and her daughter are going to participate in a “MoonWalk” to help raise funds for cancer research. This is a 26.2 mile walk through London and will take place this summer. They are already beginning their training.

She is asking you to help spread the word about this by telling your friends and colleagues to go to her web site to learn more about this event. If you have a web site or a blog yourself, putting her link on it would be a great help. Help her out by making comments about it on your MySpace or FaceBook pages.
