This blog is now devoted to the posting of my Memoir/Novel called, Lost and Found. I'll be posting it in a serialized fashion -- a new Chapter each week. I call it a 'Memoir/Novel' because it is the true story of my youth, but I've changed all names, including my own. There is a Table of Contents in the left sidebar. Just click the links to read from the beginning or to read any part you may have missed. There is a "New Chapter Notice Form" on the right. Just leave your first name and email address and I'll let you know directly when there's a new chapter posted. I'd also love to hear your comments.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 196 – Does Going Low-Carb Work?

posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |

We hear about it all the time — “If you follow a low-carb diet plan you’ll lose weight!” Low-Carb — it’s practically a household word around these parts. I don’t know if it’s as predominant in Europe, but it sure is in America. Maybe that’s because we do such a horrible job of eating healthy here. Practically every commercial on TV is about losing weight and getting in shape. Yikes! All you have to do is take a walk in a mall and you’ll see why.

weight loss, nutrition, health, diet, breakfast

So, back to the question for today’s article — Does going on a low-carb diet really work? The system seems simple enough — eat fewer of the “empty” carbs and lose weight. But, what’s going on when we do that? What makes it work?

For one thing, by removing carbohydrates from your diet you are cutting a ton of calories from your overall intake of food. By lowering those calories you are obviously eating less and this will make you lose weight. That’s the basic premise of this system.

In addition to eating fewer overall calories, if you pay attention and skip all (the emphasis is on ALL) those starchy and sugary carbs that you would normally eat, your body will begin to break down glycogen from the liver and from the muscles to free glucose.

What is glycogen? Glycogen is simply glucose that is stored in the muscles and liver. This glycogen contains a ton of water and by converting it to glucose the water is released so when you first start to eliminate those bad carbs, your initial weight loss is almost all water. The thing to realize is that this water is heavy and can help you drop a good many pounds in the first couple of weeks.

After those first couple of weeks, your rate of weight loss will slow down some. This is because you got rid of the water weight, now you need to start burning fat — and you will — IF (big IF) you keep your carb intake below 50 or 60 grams daily.

Good! Now your body is burning fat as fuel. When that happens, your body begins to produce Ketones. What exactly are Ketones? Ketones are a byproduct that is caused when the body is burning fat for fuel and energy.

These Ketones are released from the body through your kidneys. When the Ketone level increases in your kidneys your appetite is also suppressed a bit, aiding further in your losing more weight. It is highly recommended that you drink lots of water during this phase of your low carb diet to prevent dehydration.

How long you stay on your low-carb diet plan is your personal choice. You will eventually arrive at a weight that is ideal for you and your body type. When you reach that point you’ll need to add back some carbs — but just enough to maintain your ideal weight. You don’t want to yo-yo and gain all that fat back. Keep avoiding those starchy and sugary carbs and you should do fine.

It is also recommended that you consult your medical professional before embarking on such a change in eating habits in order to lose weight.

Low carb dieting works best for the percentage of the population that has metabolic syndrome. By limiting the number of carbs consumed, the body does not produce as much insulin, the hormone that leads to fat storage.

If you fall into this category, low carb is definitely the way to go. If you aren’t, low carb won’t hurt but it sure is difficult to maintain.

    Good information.

Low carb is excellent for metabolic syndrome as well as those without it.

As to being hard to maintain? I’ve not had any trouble in over 3 years. You DO have to forget about potatoes, corn, white bread and pasta….at least initially, but if you look, there are many excellent alternatives out there (AND some bogus/lousy ones!). Read you labels! There are breads that are only 10 grams a slice….and 50% is fiber. There are whole grain wraps that are excellent substitutes for bread and chips (Bake them!!), and there are lots of recipes for low carb potatoes and rice (cauliflower is used). It does take work, but the payoff is great!

Initially I noticed a decrease in calories from my “normal” diet….but my intake is much higher on low carb than it ever was following weight watchers or a low fat diet….and yet I’m loosing steadily. It’s not fast, but it’s steady. On low fat, WW, etc I would “stall” at 1200 calories, sometimes less….but with low carb I average 1600+ calories and still loose.

The biggest plus for low carb, however, is the emphasis on fresh, natural foods whenever possible. Even the plans that sell convenience foods say they are only for occasional use! Eating fresh fruits and veggies along with minimally processed dairy and natural meats is an excellent diet for anyone!!

If in doubt, try it for 2 weeks….faithfully….and see what happens. If you’re not willing to give up some foods of course it won’t work for you. But you may find many of your favorite foods are allowed on most low carb plans…..if not when loosing, then certainly while maintaining.
