The Wellness of YOU! - # 192 - Those Omega-3s Again

One of the marketing quirks that’s beginning to show up in the stores these days are that some of the food manufacturers are putting “Now — With Omega-3s!!” on the front of their packages. I even saw one a couple of days ago with those words on the front of a margarine tub. There’s no question that the subject of Omega-3 is “hot” right now. And, that’s a good thing. This is a valuable fatty acid and we all need more of it our diets. Plus, I don’t blame the food market for doing whatever they can to capitalize on it.

There is no question that we need more Omega-3 fatty acid in our diets. There is plenty of science to show that there are great benefits to our heart, brain and joints. Without enough Omega-3 our risk of heart disease and cancer increases dramatically.

The problem I see with all these food producers and their new labels is that getting your Omega-3s from a product that is processed and/or is as unnatural as margarine just doesn’t seem right. I know, that sounds opinionated, and perhaps I’m wrong about this, but I don’t think anyone knows what happens when omega-3s are isolated from their natural sources. I find it hard to believe that they will still have the same disease-fighting benefits. And, am I wrong to think that most processed foods are really just untested experiments, anyway?

Take margarine for example, since we’re using it as our focus for this discussion. Margarine is just a tub full of various chemicals that were put together in some lab. No matter how you slice it, it’s certainly not a natural product. Margarine isn’t the only product that’s boasting about all the Omega-3s — it’s also happening with breakfast cereals and processed cheeses.

If you want the real benefits of omega-3 fatty acid, then you should go to the source. Fish and nuts are the primary, natural sources. There’s also the whole-food supplement that we all seem to dislike, cod liver oil. These are all effective and affordable. What’s more, they’re natural. And natural means they have been tested by evolution.

Just add some nuts to your salad at lunch or throw a handful in a baggie and stick it in your purse or briefcase for a snack. Walnuts are the “top-nut” for a great source of omega-3. There are also a variety of fish oil capsules on the market today. Just be sure you pick ones that are free of mercury and PCBs. And, finally, be sure to have fish as a meal at least three times a week.
