The Wellness of YOU! - # 165 - Mixing it Up
posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |I’m going to do something a little different for today — I’m going to lead with a video that I worked on over the weekend. While this video is not directly related to health and nutrition, I do believe that it will help relieve a little stress. You’ll see why when you watch the video. I’ll have the article for today follow this short video. Just click on the “Play” button. This is a “first-try” for me, so please excuse the obvious “newbie” aspects.

Thanks for watching the video. Today’s article is going back to talking about exercise — and how to make it a lot more interesting by mixing it up a little.
Instead of going out for a jog or a brisk walk every day, why not try jogging one day and riding your bike or going for a swim the next day.
Or, you could do more than one form of exercise all in the same workout time. That’s a technique that I’ll often use — I’ll get on the treadmill for a shorter period of time, and then workout on the Bowflex machine for the rest of the time.
Toss in a few minutes of good stretching and you’ve made your workout time more interesting — plus you’ve made it a much more balanced workout overall. If you keep doing the exact same thing every time you work out — just doing only aerobics, for example, you can keep yourself from moving beyond a certain level — and you could also cause some injury by overworking certain muscles.
Besides relieving boredom and giving you a more balanced workout, mixing up your workout routine can help you:
* Become a more well-rounded athlete
* Introduce you to a new sport or physical activity
* Learn new and different skills
* Have more flexibility with your workouts
* Continue being active even if you hurt yourself
* Take a mental break from the same thing every day
* Improve your overall athletic performance
Here are some activities in each of the four major fitness categories that you can use to create some fun, new workouts:
Endurance
* Swimming
* Running/jogging
* Brisk walking
* Dancing
* Cycling
* Rope jumping
* Rowing
* Cross-country skiing
* Stair climbing
* Court or team sports (volleyball, tennis, racquetball)
Strength
* Free weights
* Weight machines/circuit training
* Bands and tubes
* Boot camp/calisthenics (pushups, pull ups)
* Water workouts (aquatics)
* Stair Climbing
* Ice skating or roller blading
* Pilates
* Martial arts
Flexibility
* Yoga
* Pilates
* Ballet
* Martial arts
* Other stretching exercises
Balance
* Yoga
* Tai Chi
* Leg-strengthening exercises
* Ballet and other dance
Regardless of the exercises you choose, remember to start a new activity slowly, and gradually build on your routine. Allow enough time at the beginning and end of your workout to warm up and cool down. And consult your doctor before starting a new routine if you have specific health concerns.
