This blog is devoted to things on my mind. I may post often -- or -- I may not post for a couple of weeks. The content will be varied and this blog is not designed for search engines. It's just for us folks. Enjoy, and come back often. I'd also encourage your comments. Peace!

The Wellness of YOU! - # 157 - Blood Pressure - Lower It With Food

posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

This article is aimed at those of you who are having some difficulties with high blood pressure — and also for those of you who just want to avoid ever getting it.

One of the best ways to help lower your blood pressure and to avoid it to begin with is to pay close attention to what you’re eating. Please don’t use this article as an excuse to stop taking any medications that have been prescribed by your doctor. Always make sure you’re checking with your doctor before making any changes to your normal diet.

In a previous article I mentioned the use of garlic as one of the foods that can help you lower your blood pressure. Onions also fit into that same category.

Fruits and vegetables, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, are a huge factor in helping to keep those pressures down. Oranges, apples, grapes, bananas, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, etc., can really help. These will also give you some extra vitamin C which is positive, as well. And don’t forget to have some salmon or tuna at least twice a week. You need that Omega-3 to fight hypertension.

Have some low-fat yogurt in your cereal in the morning. If you like cheese, stay with the no-fat or low-fat variety. The same goes for cottage cheese and sour cream — stay with those brands that offer low-fat or no-fat. Any dairy products that you include in your diet need to be of the lower fat types.

Definitely watch your alcohol intake. Cut way back on this. Excess alcohol, especially on a daily basis is a sure way to keep your blood pressure high. Moderation is the key here.

Be sure to watch the salt intake also. Keep those sodium levels between low and moderate. Read the labels of the food you buy.

Eat meat that has less fat. With poultry, take the white meat without the skin. It would be best to avoid red meats as much as possible, and if you do eat red meat, be sure to pick cuts that are lean. Also, eggs — you should try to avoid the egg yolks and stay with the whites, instead. There’s a lot of cholesterol in those egg yolks. The egg substitutes are great alternative.

Getting onto a healthy, nutritious diet is a smart move for everyone, and especially for those suffering from high blood pressure. You’ll feel better, you could be extending your life span, and you get to lose weight as a bonus.
