The Wellness of YOU! - # 122 - Sumo Wrestlers
posted in Nutrition and Weight Loss |

I don’t recall where I read this information, but it struck me as something I could use here in our nutrition and weight loss blog and I tucked it away in the back of my mind. For some reason it rose to the top of my thinking today.

My thoughts were on gaining weight — and I remembered this article about sumo wrestlers. Now, the people who engage in this sport are really heavy. It is almost a requirement that they be obese. I’m not going to offer any comments on what I think of that — other than to ask the question … How do they get that big?
Here’s what they do …. they skip breakfast — then they exercise for about 5 hours practicing their sport — then they eat a huge meal — then they take a long nap.
So, if you’re a sumo wrestler, this is the way you go about gaining enough weight to stand up to your opponents.
The problem is, most of us are NOT sumo wrestlers…. but we live like we are!
Think about it — so many of the people in America will skip breakfast except maybe for a cup of heavily caffeinated coffee and a trans fat/sugar laden doughnut — they work all day at their jobs — they come home and sit down to a big meal — then they sit around for awhile watching TV and eating a dessert or another snack until they go to bed.
No wonder so many Americans are overweight or obese!
You might recall, if you’ve been reading my articles for awhile, that I talked about what happens to your body when you skip breakfast. You send your body into starvation mode. This, in turn, will cause your body to store as much fat as possible instead of burning it. Then, since you’re ravenously hungry later in the day, you will tend to gorge rather than eat sensibly.
Another factor to the weight gain problem here is that eating too close to the time you go to sleep for the night will almost always guarantee that you’ll pick up some extra pounds. Whenever you fall asleep with undigested food in your belly, you will automatically store that food as fat without burning any of it.
So, two things you should do in order to avoid looking like a sumo wrestler …
(1) Eat a good breakfast every day. Don’t skip this meal. It’s one of the healthiest habits you can get into. It also gets your metabolism revved up so you burn more fat.
(2) Don’t eat within 3 hours of your bedtime. Make sure your body has time to digest all the food in your body before you fall asleep for the night. You want to burn the fat, not store it.
Oh yes, one more thing — try to eat 3 or 4 small, healthy meals during the day. This will keep your appetite under control so you won’t get the munchies, and your energy level will stay up so you’ll keep perking right along … burning fat!
