I don’t know about most women in those days — but I do know that fundamentalist religion did play a major part in the role of women in that time. There was so much emphasis on being “subservient”. I do know it was a strong factor with most of my mother’s church women and her sisters (my aunts) as well.

my grandmother, “the saint”, always lived with us but she didn’t do anything about the violence in our house. she just stayed in her room and read her Bible.

i don’t know if most women were like that in those days. i know neither my mother, aunts or grandmothers were. then too they didn’t marry men like hers.
