You Don’t Want Kidney Stones!

The number one rule to avoid kidney stones is to drink water. This is especially true during the hot summer months. This time of year, the experts advise glugging down 6 to 8 glasses a day.

There are plenty of reason for staying hydrated during the hot summer months, but one of the most important ones is to prevent kidney stone. We tend to be more active in the summer and some of those activities can shake dormant kidney stones loose and that can lead to some painful symptoms.

It’s a good idea to spread the intake of those 6 to 8 glasses a day throughout the day. Don’t try to drink it all at once or over a short period of time. You can taper off on your water intake before your bedtime so you won’t be getting up during the night.

Studies show that kidney stones may become a problem for about 13 percent of men and 7 percent of women. That’s why it’s important to be aware of how to prevent them. Here are a few tips:

* Drink plenty of water.
* Reduce your consumption of soda and iced tea, which contain an acid called oxalate that can increase the risk of certain kinds of kidney stones.
* Exercise and lose weight. The large number of sedentary and overweight people in the United States is a major factor in the increasing rate of kidney stones.
* Drink lemonade, but not the powdery mix. Real lemonade has been shown to reduce the risk of kidney stones.
* Ask your doctor about medications that can help prevent kidney stones.
* Ask your doctor if you should continue taking calcium supplements, which may increase the risk of kidney stones.
* People with highly acidic urine may have to eat less meat, fish and poultry — foods that increase the amount of acid in the urine. Discuss this with your doctor as well.
