This blog is going to change it's focus. I'm going to be posting my Memoir/Novel called, Lost and Found, in a serialized fashion. I call it a 'Memoir/Novel' because it is the true story of my youth, but I've changed all names, including my own. There is a Table of Contents in the left sidebar. Just click the links to read from the beginning or to read any part you may have missed. I have added a New Chapter Notice Form on the right. Just leave your first name and email address and I'll let you know directly when there's a new chapter. I'd also love to hear your comments.

Spiritual Cinema Circle

Body and Soul; Diana and Kathy: In the most touching documentary the SCC has ever had the privilege to program, we meet Diana and Kathy, activists, best friends, two parts who make a whole. They met almost 40 years ago in a home for the physically and mentally challenged and have been taking care of each other ever since while fighting for rights for those with disabilities. You will never forget these two incredible women and the difference they’ve made on the planet.

Spiritual Cinema Circle

Feathers to the Sky: Filmed in Uruguay, this beautiful short film depicts a young girl, living with her disabled grandfather, who is forced to sell `feathers’ (dyed marsh weeds) to support them both while she dreams of going to school with the other children in the village.

And, here is the feature film for May, 2008. Guarding Eddy. It’s a beautiful story and one that is sure to live in your heart and mind for some time.

Spiritual Cinema Circle

Guarding Eddy: This touching feature is based on the true story of 18 year-old Eddy Patterson, an autistic sports fanatic who dreams of playing pro-basketball. After running away to Los Angeles, Eddy lands in a homeless shelter where he meets pro-player Mike Jeffreys, who had given up on his own dream of the NBA because of a knee injury. The two men teach each other important lessons while discovering real friendship and a rebirth of possibility in their lives. A beautiful story that reminds us that we all face our challenges no matter how talented we seem to be, and we can all use a little help to stay on track.

Stress Equals Burnout

Burnout can be caused by stress. That’s sort of an obvious statement, isn’t it? I had often thought that burnout could be caused by diet and chemical imbalances, but in doing my research about stress, I discovered I was wrong.

weight loss, nutrition, health, diet, breakfast

Actually, burnout is considered to be the less severe form of depression, anxiety and mood disorders.

The symptoms of burnout include exhaustion, both physical and emotional, lowered immune system, withdrawal from personal relationships, and increased absence from work. In looking at some of the symptoms of burnout you will see the close relationship it has to stress.

Prolonged stress can cause you to feel tired much of the time. Even getting out of bed is a strain because you don’t have the energy you once had. Emotional exhaustion is another part of burnout. Your mood swings wildly, sometimes you feel sad for no reason, and you’re impatient, moody and get frustrated easily. You might often find you can’t deal with life the same as you did before.

When a person experiences burnout, they may have less resistance to disease. Their immune system suffers from prolonged bouts of stress. You may start suffering from more colds or the flu as well as other minor illnesses. You may also find you are more prone to more serious illnesses.

There is also a tendency to withdraw from personal relationships because you feel you have less to give. You lose interest in having fun and you lose patience with people.

Burnout also causes you to look at life with more of a pessimistic outlook. You don’t get excited about those things that used to excite you and it’s hard to see anything positive in life. Little things that wouldn’t have affected you before now weigh you down. You have a harder time getting out of a rut or routine.

All these symptoms eventually lead to increased absenteeism and being less productive when you are at work.

Now that I’ve just written this most depressing post, I’d like to turn this around and say that you can control stresses in your life — if you choose to do so. So much of the stress in our lives is caused by our constant dwelling in the past or worrying about the future. If you think about it carefully, you’ll see that at this moment — right now — there is no past to dwell in — it’s gone — you can’t go back there — and there is no future to worry about — it’s not here yet. And if you think, “Well it will be in a moment” — I’m here to tell you that when that moment comes it will be the present.

Bring meditation into your daily life. It’s vital to your good health and your peace of mind. It’s the greatest way to learn how to be in the present and how to become friends with what is — because what is is all there truly is. Learn to be freinds with the present moment and your life of stress will fade away.

The Wellness of You! # 228 – Control Stress

Since we’ve been talking about stress in the past couple of articles, let’s continue with that. Stress is obviously something that affects every one of us. And, since that’s the fact of the matter, we need to learn to find ways to effectively control this emotion.

weight loss, nutrition, health, diet, breakfast

We need to get into the habit of looking for the sources of stress. We need to learn to rearrange our priorities and we need to learn how to change the ways in which we respond to stressful situation.

The first order of business is to identify the sources of your stress. Try keeping a diary or journal to help you recognize what events during the day are causing you stress. Keep track of all your activities even if you write down just a few words and the time the event happens. This may be another chore added to your already crowded schedule but is necessary to help identify the stressors in your life. Which activities trigger anxiety or anger? Which events trigger a negative physical response such as a headache or a gastrointestinal problem? It’s important to note which events make you happy or give you pleasure. Noting your positive experiences will help you decide the activities that give you a sense of accomplishment or joy instead of stress.

After you have identified the main sources of stress you need to ask yourself if they are self-imposed stresses or are they someone else’s goals you are trying to meet. Have you committed yourself to activities or tasks that force you into unreasonable time lines? Which events are under your control? Which events can you change?

These are all good questions and the answers must come from within you.

Reorganizing your priorities will help you reduce the activities that cause you too much stress. Erasing stress is nearly an impossible feat, but there are ways to reduce its impact on your mental and physical health. Usually, adding activities that are enjoyable will aid in reducing stress.

Take long weekends and family vacations. If your stress comes from your home, find ways to get out of the house, even if it is only for an hour or two a week.

You may want to replace some time-consuming tasks with activities that give you pleasure. This is just as important as cleaning house and paying bills. Allow yourself the time to enjoy your children, and spend quiet, loving time with your spouse. This will encourage positive and happy feelings and will help in reducing stress.

Talk about your feelings, especially if they are feelings of anger, frustration, or fear. Repressing these emotions can result in depression, a feeling of being helpless. Talking about your feelings don’t mean venting them on others. Venting your anger is not a good way to handle negative feelings and emotions. Talk to a trusted friend or confidant in the most positive way possible. Writing a letter, poem, or making a journal entry may also be a good way to vent negative feelings.

As I always recommend to you — bring meditation into your daily life. It’s vital to your good health and your peace of mind.

The Wellness of You! # 227 – Acute Stress

The effect acute stress can have on our bodies is amazing. The number of different events that will occur in our bodies when we’re faced with a serious stressful situation are numerous. The surprising thing is how quickly they all happen — within seconds!

weight loss, nutrition, health, diet, breakfast

In just a matter of just a few seconds, all the following events may take place without our being consciously aware of most of them.

Our brain reacts immediately to any threat by taking actions to deal with it as quickly as possible. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system is started and several actions happen immediately. Stress hormones are released including the cortisol stress hormone that we talked about last week. This hormone gathers all the defenses in the body to prepare for an attack. The brain, circulation, immune systems, skin, and metabolism systems prepare their part of the body for a pending attack.

Neurotransmitters called catecholamines, and in particular one called adrenaline, are released to help deal with a stressful event. They activate a portion of the brain that triggers the response you have to the event. It checks the memories stored to see if you had something similar happen and what response was given. Catecholamines then block activity that concerns short-term memory, restraint, rational thought, and concentration. This allows you to think and react quickly to the stressful event.

The circulation system and the lungs are also affected. You breathe heavier because the lungs are asking for more oxygen. Blood flow increases to get the muscles and body ready for a quick response, and the spleen sends out more red and white blood cells to ready the body for an attack. Heart rate and blood pressure increase rapidly.

The immune system reacts to an immediate threat or danger by sending out white cells that are infection fighters to the areas most likely to be affected by an immediate attack. Mainly they go the skin, bone marrow, and lymph nodes.

Acute stress will cause the mouth and throat to dry up. Talking may become difficult and you may find it hard to swallow. The blood will go from the skin to other important tissues such as the heart and muscles. This causes your skin to feel cold and clammy. The scalp tightens and you will feel like your hair is standing straight up.

The digestive system shuts down temporarily when facing danger or acute stress. The body believes this work is not necessary during a crisis or physical exercise.

Once the threat or crisis is over, the body will revert to its normal roles. It allows the body to become normal and lets the stress hormones to return to normal. This is the relaxation response. When the stress hormones return to their normal state, the rest of the body’s systems return to normal also.

Stress may cause overload of your body’s stress reactors and may cause physical and psychological side effects. If that happens, you may not be able to deal with stress and that may lead to depression. Scientists believe that continuous release of stress hormones may change the normal levels of serotonin the body needs for feelings of happiness and emotional wellness. Stress reduces your ability to enjoy life, personal pleasures and accomplishments. Stress can harm relationships and cause deeper emotional problems.

It is vital that we all do whatever we can to not only avoid situations that my be highly stressful, but also to teach ourselves ways to be better able to handle stresses when they do come into our lives.

One good way is to bring meditation into your daily life.
