Entertaining Angels

As you read today’s articles, you’ll see that it doesn’t have a thing to do with good nutrition, diet, exercise or any of the things you normally see here. Rather, today, I’d like to share this heartwarming story with you — and even though it’s off topic for what we usually write, it does have something to do with food.

I won’t be writing next week, but I will be back with a new article on January 3rd.

I wish you and yours a wonderful and peaceful holiday season.

Shanti,

Ron

Entertaining Angels

It was fifty years ago, on a hot summer day, in the deep south.

We lived on a dirt road, on a sand lot. We were, what was known as “dirt poor.”

I had been playing outside all morning in the sand. Suddenly, I heard a sharp clanking sound behind me and looking over my shoulder, my eyes were drawn to a strange sight!

Across the dirt road were two rows of men, dressed in black and white, striped, baggy uniforms. Their faces were covered with dust and sweat. They looked so weary, and they were chained together with huge, black, iron chains. Hanging from the end of each chained row was a big, black, iron ball. They were, as polite people said in those days, a “Chain Gang,” guarded by two, heavily armed guards.

I stared at the prisoners as they settled uncomfortably down in the dirt, under the shade of some straggly trees.

One of the guards walked towards me.

Nodding as he passed, he went up to our front door and knocked. My mother appeared at the door, and I heard the guard ask if he could have permission to get water from the pump, in the backyard, so that “his men” could “have a drink.” My mother agreed, but I saw a look of concern on her face, as she called me inside.

I stared through the window as each prisoner was unchained from the line, to hobble over to the pump and drink his fill from a small tin cup, while a guard watched vigilantly. It wasn’t long before they were all chained back up again, with prisoners and guards retreating into the shade, away from an unrelenting sun.

I heard my mother call me into the kitchen, and I entered, to see her bustling around with tins of tuna fish, mayonnaise, our last loaf of bread, and two, big, pitchers of lemonade. In what seemed “a blink of an eye,” she had made a tray of sandwiches using all the tuna we were to have had for that night’s supper.

My mother was smiling as she handed me one of the pitchers of lemonade, cautioning me to carry it “carefully” and to “not spill a drop.” Then, lifting the tray in one hand and holding a pitcher in her other hand, she marched me to the door, deftly opening it with her foot, and trotted me across the street.

She approached the guards, flashing them with a brilliant smile.

“We had some leftovers from lunch,” she said, “and I was wondering if we could share with you and your men.” She smiled at each of the men, searching their dark eyes with her own eyes of “robin’s egg blue.” Everyone started to their feet. “Oh no!” she said. “Stay where you are! I’ll just serve you!”

Calling me to her side, she went from guard to guard, then from prisoner to prisoner - filling each tin cup with lemonade, and giving each man a sandwich. It was very quiet, except for a “thank you, ma’am,” and the clanking of the chains. Very soon we were at the end of the line, my mother’s eyes softly scanning each face.

The last prisoner was a big man, his dark skin pouring with sweat, and streaked with dust. Suddenly, his face broke into a wonderful smile, as he looked up into my mother’s eyes, and he said, “Ma’am, I’ve wondered all my life if I’d ever see an angel, and now I have! Thank you!”

Again, my mother’s smile took in the whole group. “You’re all welcome!” she said. “God bless you.” Then we walked across to the house, with empty tray and pitchers, and back inside. Soon, the men moved on, and I never saw them again.

The only explanation my mother ever gave me, for that strange and wonderful day, was that I “remember, always, to entertain strangers, for by doing so, you may entertain angels, without knowing.” Then, with a mysterious smile, she went about the rest of the day.

I don’t remember what we ate for supper, that night. I just know it was served by an angel.

The Wellness of You! # 214 — Exercise — Just Do It!

One of the aspects of life that many of us find difficult to maintain, is about exercise. We can find so many reasons not to do it. In fact, I’ll bet it’s one of the top-ranked forms of procrastination. As I grow older, I know that to be so true. It’s not about finding the time, it’s about finding the energy that’s such a problem. Even if I do have exercise scheduled into my day, I still look for reasons to avoid it.

weight loss, nutrition, health, diet, breakfast

One of the reasons why we really should learn to make exercise an important part of our daily routine is the desire to remain independent as we age. We need to maintain strength if we want to continue to carry in the groceries — open jars — do the gardening — take out the garbage — shovel the mulch or the snow. While we’re young, doing those things is a piece of cake. However, if we want to keep doing them in our later years, we better be thinking about exercise — and not only thinking about it but doing it now.

Having more muscle increases your metabolism, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight. Since muscle is an active tissue it uses up more calories compared to fat. After age 20, most of us lose about a half pound of muscle a year. By the time we’re 65, we’ll have lost 25 percent of our peak strength.

But, just because we’re all getting older doesn’t mean we have to get soft and weak. The experts all agree that most of the muscle loss that’s occurring as we age is caused by not using them enough. It’s not the aging — it’s the lack of use, folks!

You can start building and regaining strength at any age. So if it has been a while since you’ve worked on your strength, don’t worry. Research shows that even people who begin strength training in their 90s can gain muscle and strength in as few as eight weeks. Strengthening exercises involve working against a force which can come from your body, weight machines, free weights or barbells, a body bar, resistance bands, stability ball, or water.

You’ll need to work the different muscle groups two or three times a week. This includes your arms, legs, chest, shoulders, stomach, and back. The American Council on Exercise recommends starting with one set of 8-12 repetitions for each muscle exercise.

There are many other things you can do besides weight lifting to build strength. One example is old-fashioned calisthenics, such as push-ups, sit-ups, and chin-ups. Aerobic activities that build endurance – such as walking, cycling, running, swimming, and certain martial arts and dance classes – are good leg-strengthening exercises.

Choose activities you enjoy so you’ll stick with it. Mixing up your workouts every now and then will keep you and your muscles from getting bored. If your fitness routine is focused on lower body strength, be sure to balance out your upper body with a workout too. For example, if you walk four or five times a week, add an upper body workout on the two or three days you don’t walk. Try hand weights, a rowing machine, or push-ups.

It’s important to “lengthen” or stretch muscles after you do a strengthening exercise. Stretching helps increase blood flow to your muscles, minimizes aches and pains and can help reduce feelings of tension or stress. Daily stretching, even for 10 minutes, will keep you limber and reduce your risk of pulling a muscle or getting some other injury. A fun way to get some good stretching is to take a yoga class.

Even though you’re likely to see quick results, it’s normal for these changes to slow down after several weeks of working out. Don’t let this discourage you; stick with your program even though improvements are not as obvious. After several months of resistance training, most men and women will increase their muscular strength by 20 to 40 percent, according to the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

Many people hurt themselves strength training by moving too fast. Choose lighter weights to start – three- or five-pound – and build up gradually. Muscles need time to repair. Don’t train the same muscle group two days in a row.

A rule of thumb: If you can’t repeat eight weight exercises in a row, the weight is too heavy. Try a lighter weight. If you can lift a weight more than 15 times in a row, the weight is too light - get one slightly heavier. Don’t increase the weight you lift by more than 10 percent at any time. Remember to warm up with slow movement, such as marching in place, and cool down (stretch) your muscles each time you work out.

As always, before you start any exercise program you’ll want to be sure to check in with your doctor to make sure that you don’t embark on some form of exercise that may be harmful to you. It’s very rare that doctors will tell you not to exercise, but there may be some workout routines that you may need to hold off for a while until you build your core strength.

The Wellness of You! # 213 - Bone Loss Risk

Never an evening goes by that I don’t see another one of those commercials for prescription medicines. They have commercials for prescriptions for just about everything you can imagine, but many of them are for depression and anxiety. What a statement for our society that the drug companies can be profitable while paying for commercials for these products. Are there that many of us who need these products, or is this just an easy way out of actually dealing with the cause of the problem?

weight loss, nutrition, health, diet, breakfast

In today’s world, if you go to your doctor for anxiety or depression, they’ll hand you a prescription for something like Zoloft or Prozac. One of the things that most of us don’t realize or take notice of, is that these drugs have a slew of side effects. There is the risk of impotence, weight gain, low blood pressure, and loss of libido.

There’ another one — and that’s the risk of bone loss — or osteoporosis. Several researchers have found that people over 50 who take antidepressants have double the risk of this bone loss condition. The study - published in the Archives of Internal Medicine - found that the pills may have a direct effect on bone cells, decreasing bone size and strength. The result is an increased risk for broken bones and further loss of bone density.

However, those of you who are taking one of these drugs do have another alternative that won’t mess up your body or your bones. It’s a natural option and it’s called S-adenosyl methionine (SAM-e). SAM-e is present in every cell of your body. However, because of aging and our tendency towards poor nutrition, the amount of SAM-e produced in our bodies is less than it should be.

Scientists have been studying SAM-e for decades. In most cases, it is as effective as antidepressant drugs - and it doesn’t have the side effects mentioned above. SAM-e is known to raise levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, and it may also accelerate the production, uptake, and re-release of serotonin. Recent study results show that SAM-e may help to relieve the symptoms of adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Additionally, it may relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia, a condition that causes generalized pain in the muscles and joints.

A few years ago, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study that compared SAM-e and a popular antidepressant for six weeks. All the participants showed positive improvement, but those taking the SAM-e reported almost no side effects. (On rare occasions, SAM-e will upset your stomach - or, very rarely, may cause a skin rash. But these symptoms disappear when you stop taking it.) At the end of the study, SAM-e had performed just as well as the prescription drug and was better tolerated.

SAM-e is available in most health food stores, drug stores and on the Internet.

As always, if your anxiety or depression persists, get in touch with your doctor. You should also refer to your doctor whenever you decide to try a non-prescription treatment option. People with Parkinson’s or bi-polar disorder should not take SAM-e supplements. Pregnant women and children need to consult with their doctor before taking any non-prescription supplement.

And, of course, if you’re taking one of the antidepressant drugs like, Prozac, Zoloft, or Paxil — or you’re taking one of the MAOIs, like, Marplan, Narpil or Parnate, don’t start taking SAM-e without first consulting with your doctor. Definitely, don’t take them both at the same time.
