The Wellness of YOU # 209 - Scary Diagnosis!
From everything I read I would guess that the one health fear most people are scared to death about is to ever get a diagnosis of cancer. You don’t want to ever hear those words, “You have cancer!”
I know what it’s like to hear those words. I do remember how fearful I was at the time. I don’t wish for any of you to ever hear those words. I will say, though, that I do believe that there is a positive factor in being afraid of hearing those words, because that fear may motivate us to make the changes necessary to reduce the risk of that ever happening.
Here a a few of the changes that you could make a part of your life today:
1. Know your risk factors. Know your family history. Discuss it with your doctor and request genetic testing if there is a strong family history. If you’re like me and don’t know your family history, talk to your doctor anyway!
2. Everyone should get regular screenings — men — women — and children. Early detection is the key to survival. Refer to the American Cancer Society’s website (http://www.cancer.org) for the appropriate ages and other factors that determine when these screenings should begin for you. Discuss earlier and/or more frequent screenings with your doctor if you have a strong family history.
3. Know your body and know how to do self-exams. (Yes. You guys need to be doing this too!) Report any unusual lump, bump or discoloration to your doctor. Teach your children to let Mom or Dad know about changes they notice in their bodies, too. Sadly, no one is immune to cancer, not even newborn infants.
4. Please, please, please stop doing the things that we know increase the likelihood of developing cancer. Stop smoking NOW. If you don’t drink alcohol now, don’t start. If you do drink alcohol, limit your intake to one drink per day for women and two for men. Don’t have your body pierced in places that cannot possibly heal thoroughly, places like your mouth and nose. The incidence of oral cancers and head and neck cancers has skyrocketed since this trend took hold. Pop that jewelry out right now and let that piercing heal.
5. Do what your mother told you to do. Eat an apple instead of a cookie. Eat 9 (that’s right - nine!) fruits and vegetables every day and drink lots of water. Get outside (15 minutes of sunshine every day). Get a good night’s sleep every night. Avoid chemical exposure whenever possible. Buy organic produce. Use non-toxic household cleaners. You’d be amazed at what’s in some of those items. Start “living green.”
6. Move your body. Don’t call it “exercise” unless you enjoy “exercise.” Just get out and play. Ride your bike. Take a hike. Swim. Dance. Play some tennis. In the winter, go skiing, or sledding or skating. Whatever — just get off your duff and move!
7. Forgive every hurt you’ve ever suffered. Don’t carry grudges. Do something kind for someone every day.
8. Learn mindful breathing and meditation. Practice them every day.
9. Stretch your body, mind and spirit on a regular basis. Have amazing goals. When you achieve one, set another bigger, higher, even more amazing one.
10. Find your spiritual center and connect with it throughout the day every day.
The overall survival rate for all cancers combined is now around 70%! That is nothing short of amazing! That’s up considerably over the past few years. Researchers are gaining on the more than 100 different and unique types of cancer every day! Treatments and outcomes are improving every day.
Unfortunately, however, that doesn’t mean the fear is going away, but - again - I believe this is a fear that can be used for good. We can all use a little bit of fear to remind us to live healthier lives every day and to live in the moment — every moment.
Stop what you’re doing right now. Breathe in. Breathe out. Say “thank you!” for your life, whatever its struggles and challenges. It is yours and yours alone, and it is a precious, precious gift.
