The Wellness of YOU # 211 - Ohh! Too Full!

So many of you in the USA are getting ready for the “feast of the year” called Thanksgiving. Getting together with family and friends on this day has become an American tradition — a tradition that revolves around eating large quantities of food. Before I get into the article for this day before Thanksgiving, I want to say, for everyone, everywhere, I wish you all a peaceful and happy day of Thanksgiving.

There is another part of this annual tradition that isn’t necessarily good — and that’s the overeating part. So many of us find that before the day is over we can hardly move we’re so full of food. One of the ways that some people will try to compensate for this tendency to eat too many unhealthy foods, is to fast before the big meal. Folks, this is a recipe for failure.

Depriving your body of food is a sure way to bring on extreme hunger, cravings, and the temptation to overeat. Your body thinks it’s starving and your brain is getting the message to eat, eat, eat!

Thankfully, there are ways to avoid overeating that are healthy.

Eat healthy meals for breakfast and lunch if your Thanksgiving day meal is planned for later in the day. If it’s for mid-day, then be sure to eat a good healthy breakfast. Have some fresh veggies, fruits and fiber-rich whole grains. Use fat-free or low fat milk on your cereal. The trick is to arrive at your Thanksgiving meal no hungrier than you would normally be at that time of day. When you don’t feel as though you’d eat the plate if it was passed to you, you’ll be more able to pass on the highly processed carbs and the bad fats like the buttery mashed potatoes. Rather, eat a nice portion of turkey breast and vegetables.

Don’t forget to get Aunt Suzie or Uncle Ed out for a good brisk walk if the weather is nice. That helps to keep the blood sugar levels in the normal range thereby decreasing the cravings for sweets.

Ask your spouse or partner to keep you motivated to stay the healthy-eating course. Obviously, you can return the favor and do the same for them.

If the usual snack at your gathering is chips and dip, just bring along something to put on the snack table that you know is healthy. Make a nice hummus and have some whole-grain crackers to put it on. That way you can eat what you bring instead of loading up on the unhealthy chips and fatty dips.

Of course you can have dessert! Enjoy a small piece of pumpkin pie or a few pieces of dark chocolate — or whatever else is a family favorite. Enjoy a small portion — savor every bite — and know that you’ve done well and kept to your healthy lifestyle.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving day and a healthy, nutritious meal.
