The Wellness of You - # 207 - Water — How Much?

The vacation is over and it was wonderful. We traveled to Vermont, a place I lived for over 30 years — and a place that I will love until the day I die. The colors were beautiful. For those of you who are not residents of the USA, Vermont (and New England in general), is noted for the beautiful fall colors of the many trees and forests. It was well worth taking the time to make the trip.

I’m writing a day early this week, as I have a rather full plate tomorrow, my usual day for writing these articles.

Today, I wanted to talk about water. I have always been one to advocate for getting at least eight full eight ounce glasses of water every day. I still like that idea, but there is new information that says you don’t have to keep track of how much water you drink every day.

Instead of following the frequently recommended guideline (eight cups daily, which turns out to be an arbitrary amount), the Institute of Medicine (IOM) suggests drinking when you’re thirsty. There have been several studies which show that most people do keep themselves hydrated sufficiently.

For myself, I know that I get thirsty easily. I have to have water ready and available all the time. I do drink over eight glasses of water a day. I believe that if I didn’t drink when I was thirsty, I wouldn’t be properly hydrated.

There is also the factor that foods that contain lots of water can count as a way to hydrate your body - foods like fresh vegetables and fresh fruits can take the place of some of your water intake every day. Of course, they’re good for your overall health, anyway.

On average, women require 91 ounces of water each day and men require 125 ounces, though athletes and people who live in warmer climates may need more. It’s worth repeating, however, that you don’t need to keep track of your fluid consumption. You can tell you’re not getting enough water if you develop increased thirst, dry lips and mouth, headache, fatigue, constipation and darker urine. Consult with your physician if you notice any of these symptoms.

The Wellness of You - # 206 - Have You Gone to the Dogs?

Before we get into today’s article, I just wanted to let you know that I will be away for the next week, and won’t be able to get the usual article out next Thursday. I will be back the following week, though.

I’ll bet you’re wondering about the title for today’s article, right? What does our health have to do with dogs?

Good question.

I ran across an article the other day about just that — dog’s health and our health. It was interesting to me because it had to with old dogs and the old adage, “You Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks!”

Well, it turns out that maybe you can!

You might be able to not only teach an old dog new tricks, but you just might be able to do the same for the dog’s old master.

Some researchers (I’ve lost the information on where these researchers were located — sorry!) that were studying the effects of aging among elderly humans discovered that older beagles “kept a gleam in their eye and a spring in their step” when they were fed a healthy diet that included plenty of vitamins and were kept in a happy environment. The “happy environment” meant lots of toys, playmates, and also, plenty of exercise.

It turns out that dogs are good models for the study of human aging because they have similar brain structures and, like people, they can develop memory and learning problems as they grow old.

In a two-year study of 48 beagles ages 7 to 11, some of the dogs received standard care, while others got an enriched diet or lifestyle, or both. All the pampered dogs showed improvement in mental acuity compared with the control group. But the beagles that got it all -— exercise, stimulation, and an enriched diet -— outperformed the other dogs in increasingly difficult tests.

So what’s the lesson here?

I guess it’s to get with the program — it’s better late than never! Don’t let yourself “go to the dogs”, rather go WITH the dogs. If the dogs can do it, why can’t you? Start eating a good healthy diet with plenty of nutrition, stay away from all the foods that add fat to your body, get plenty of exercise, and stay active.

I don’t know about the “playmates” part that the dogs enjoyed — I’ll leave that part of this up to you.

The Wellness of You - # 205 - A Way to Test Your Heart

Every so often I’ll get an email from one of the readers of this blog with a question. I had someone recently ask me about the CRP test for heart disease.

To be honest, I didn’t know too much about this test, but I had heard about it. So, I did some research and thought it might be a good idea to answer this person via the blog. (Note: I did email this reader and asked if I could refer to this question here, and got permission to do so. The person did wish to remain anonymous, however.)

The test we’re discussing here today is known as the C-Reactive Protein, or the CRP.

Everything I’ve read about this test tells me to pass along to you that anyone with risk factors for heart disease — risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity or anyone who smokes — and including someone with a family history of heart disease — should get a high-sensitivity CRP — or (hs-CRP).

If the initial results are elevated, two additional CRP measurements — taken at least one month apart — must be taken and shown to be elevated for the test to be definitive.

CRP, a protein found in the blood, is produced by the liver (as well as fat cells and smooth muscle) in response to inflammation. The inflammation itself may be a response to an acute condition, like a cold, or something chronic, such as gingivitis (gum disease).

Numerous well-regarded studies have found that those with chronic, low-grade inflammation, which is associated with a high CRP, are at increased risk for heart disease and stroke, even in the absence of other well-established risk factors, like high cholesterol.

(Important Note: Wait to have CRP drawn if you’ve had a recent illness, since it may skew the results.)

As I always advise in these articles, a weight-healthy strategy, along with an exercise program, is not only the best thing for you in general terms, it can also help you lower your CRP as you shed any excess pounds.
