The Wellness of YOU! - # 201 - Is Sugar Always Sugar?
One of the most common questions that most people have when they are attempting to lose weight, especially if one of their dietary habits is the intake of simple carbohydrates like sugar, is — “Isn’t there some other form of ’sugar’ that I can use? What about the natural sugars like honey or the sugar that you get in fruit juices?”

The answer is the same every time I give it — sugar is sugar is sugar.
All the food you eat that is digestible — whether it is a carbohydrate or not — can be converted to glucose (sugar) in your body. Your body uses this glucose to give you energy. Some foods are considered high glycemic which means that those foods will be converted to glucose very quickly when you eat them. When that happens, your body will experience a sharp increase in blood sugar which is followed by a similar increase in the production of insulin. When this happens often, when you eat high glycemic foods, like sugar, you are all set up for weight gain and a substantial increase in your risk for diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and a whole slew of other ailments you won’t like.
It doesn’t make any difference whether the sugar you consume is the refined type, or whether it’s natural or organic. Sugar is sugar whether it comes from honey, fruit juice, mashed or baked white potatoes, white rice or white bread. When you regularly consume foods that cause your body to break them down quickly into glucose, you’ll see your waistline get larger and your health deteriorate.
Oh yes, another of the “foods” (and I use the term loosely with this one), is high fructose corn syrup. This is one of the worst so-called sugars you can consume — and if you look at labels, you’ll see it’s everywhere! All those diet drinks and other sodas, all those cakes, all those cookies, those hot dog and hamburger buns, those English muffins, most breads, even frozen foods — just look at the labels. When high fructose corn syrup began to be added to our foods and drinks, our obesity rates went up accordingly. Here’s a good article about it from the San Francisco Chronicle. I hope the link works:

The answer to the sugar question is this —- stick to foods that have a low-glycelmic index value like the above-ground vegetables, naturally raised meats, nuts, beans, seeds, berries, and most whole fruits. Generally, you should at least limit your intake of enriched grains and starches, white potatoes, white rice, white flour, fruit juices, and those sweet things we all like for dessert. And, look at the labels for those hidden sugars like high fructose corn syrup or evaporated cane juice.
