The Wellness of YOU! – # 185 – Good Family Lunches

What do you do if you’re the person who prepares the meals in your home, but you’re the only one who is trying to lose weight — or who is really focused on getting healthier through your dietary habits? I know that happens a lot, and there are ways to meet your needs at the same time as you’re meeting your family’s.

With some careful planning, you can come up with great meals that everyone in your family can enjoy. And, do you know what the really neat part of this blog today is?

Not only are you going to keep losing the weight you want to lose — not only are you going to feel better and have a lot more vitality — but you family is also going to be getting great nutrition and be enjoying better health — and who knows — they may also lose a few pounds in the process!

Here are a few guidelines to help you with lunches …

* Keep your cupboards stocked with a variety of whole-grain breads. Whole-wheat sliced bread, whole-wheat pita, whole-grain pumpernickel, and whole-grain tortillas are some family-friendly varieties to choose from.

* Make hearty, family-worthy Cobb or chef-style salads with dark, leafy greens, tomatoes, avocados, turkey bacon, and lean deli meats. Use low-sugar, low-fat salad dressings or make your own using extra-virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, lemon or lime juice and some fresh herbs.

* Make some hearty bean soups using lentils, split peas, and black beans. These are nutrient-dense, fiber-rich choices that will satisfy the entire family. Don’t forget to add some good veggies and stay away from any white rices or pasta. If you want to add these to the soup, be sure you go for the brown rice or whole wheat pastas.

* Enjoy lean deli meats. Choose lean deli meats like turkey breast, chicken breast, and ham. Make sure you select varieties without added sugars (for instance, avoid honey-baked ham), and serve deli meats with condiments like Dijon mustard and mayonnaise. You can also save on some extra calories by not putting it all on bread once in a while. Go for a roll-up instead by rolling the meat and some low-fat or no-fat cheese into a boston lettuce leaf. If you do use bread, stay with the 100% whole grain varieties of bread, pitas, and tortillas.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 184 – Clock-Wise

How often does it happen in your life where you are “up against the clock” when it come to getting and preparing a good menu choice for your family? Here are a few tips to help you become more “Clock-wise.”

I’ll be the first to admit that there are plenty of times when doing the shopping — and then putting together a good healthy meal seems like a luxury that I just can’t afford — and it’s usually because I’ve run out of time to put it all together. It would be a whole lot simpler if I just order something from the Chinese restaurant, or just stop and grab a quick sandwich or something fast and non-nutritious.

However, besides knowing that this is a cop-out of sorts, I’ve also learned that if I plan ahead and prepare for those days when time is a factor, I’ll end up with a lot less stress in my life.

There are those surprises, though — when things come up that you weren’t prepared for. Perhaps these time-savers will help you — and me!

1. One of my favorites is to cook a larger quantity of food than would be eaten at one meal and freeze the leftovers. Then, on those days when I don’t have much time, just reheat them. This is great, especially if it’s something you really like.

2. Keep a bag of salad greens on hand. Just wash them good before you put them into the salad crisper compartment and you can have a nice salad ready in a couple of minutes.

3. Chop up some fresh veggies on the weekend so they’ll be ready during the week.

4. Have some foods around that don’t require a lot of work. I’m thinking of canned tuna or canned salmon as an example. Having some low-fat yogurt is another good one to have around. Have some previously cut-up fresh fruit to go with the yogurt and you have a nice small meal. Canned soups are also handy.

5. Remember to have some nuts or some low-fat cheese handy for when you need a snack.

6. If you do have to make a restaurant stop rather than preparing a meal yourself, bring home half of it (which is usually all you should eat at once anyway) and you have a meal ready to go for later in the week.

7. Don’t forget that if you’re on a tight schedule for when you get home — and you won’t get a chance to take that walk or go for that bike ride later, to take a good brisk walk at lunchtime. Good exercise is also a part of good health and nutrition.

8. Sometimes, especially if your time crunch is going to happen at dinner-time, it’s okay to eat your dinner in the middle of the day and just have a light lunch-type meal at dinner time.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 183 – A Better Life

Since today is the first nice, sunny day we’ve had around here for a while, I decided to break with my usual tradition and give you something a bit different. I’ll get back to our regular articles about nutrition and weight loss on Monday.

This is a short video (about 4 minutes) that I’d like to share with you. It’s called “Better Life” — and is one of the most profound things I’ve seen in a long time. It’s absolutely beautiful. While it certainly doesn’t have any direct relationship to nutrition and weight loss, it sure does have a lot to do with good health. How often do we dream of having a “Better Life” — one that is always filled with happiness, good health and joy?

So for today, I offer you this short video to take you away from your usual — whatever that happens to be — and give you instead, 4 minutes of the magic of imagination.

I don’t know too much about the creator of this video, but I have learned that this was done using the concepts of “Second Life”. Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by a total of 5,502,966 people from around the globe. Thousands of new residents join each day and Create an Avatar. Those avatars Explore the World and Meet People. These people discover the thousands of ways to live their “Second Life”. Some people decide to purchase Virtual Land, which allows them to open a business, build their own virtual paradise, and more!

I did watch one other video where the developer was talking to a real-life person who had cerebral palsy. This young man had the ability to soar with grace in a world of his own creation and live a “Second Life” in the persona of his avatar.

I don’t know if that’s the case with the creator of this video — and if any of you know more about it, please leave a comment and fill us in. I do know that the name of the digital alter-ego in this video is known as Robbie Dingo.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 182 – Teach the Kids

How much candy did you give to the children in your life as part of the Easter celebration at your house? Where did we come up with the custom of feeding kids candy at Easter? Halloween, too, for that matter. I know, it’s a real pet peeve for me — and I’m sure many of you are just going to say, “Lighten Up, Ron!” I hear you, but I also hear the awful statistics about childhood obesity and the fact that so many children are now contracting type 2 diabetes.

I know, and agree, that if the children in our lives aren’t getting loaded up with poor nutrition most days, that to spoil them with a little candy on these holidays won’t hurt them. You’re right — it won’t. But what about the rest of the time? Are we doing a good job of teaching children the principles of healthy eating? And are we doing it an an early enough age so they’ll be able to live a healthier life?


“Children who learn to make the right food choices — selecting colorful fruits and vegetables, good fats, and good carbs, while avoiding trans fats in packaged foods and fast foods —; are more likely to maintain a healthy weight and enjoy lifelong health,” says Dr. Arthur Agatston, preventive cardiologist and author of The South Beach Diet™.

What’s the first step to making this more of a reality? It’s about making sure that we’re setting the example. If the kids see us eating fresh produce, good lean sources of proteins, using 100% whole grains in our breads and cereals, and staying with low-fat or no-fat dairy goods, then they’ll get the picture.

The other main step is to not have any foods in the house that have poor nutrition. If the foods that are served at meals — or the foods that are available for snacking, are all healthy — then that’s what they’ll eat. Sure, when they go to grandma’s house, they’ll probably end up with some sweets — that’s what grandmas do. But, just think, if you as parents teach your children what’s good for them, someday you’ll be a grandparent too, and you’ll know better than to feed your grandchildren foods that may bring harm to them. And, the other thing along this same line is that your parents are the grandparents — can’t you ask them to respect your wishes about what to feed your children?

Another thing that will also help is to involve your children in the food preparation process. Let them help with choosing recipes. Let them help with the shopping. You know how you like to take tastes while you’re preparing a dish — they’ll get enjoyment from that, too. Get your kids involved in the process. They’ll be much more likely to appreciate good food if they’ve been allowed to be part of the creation.

This preparation involvement goes for desserts, too. It is possible to prepare good, healthy desserts. Let them be a part of putting it all together while they’re young, and they’ll learn. Think of all the recipes that you use today that you learned from your parents — and they learned from their parents.

Let me leave you with a bit of humor that pertains to passing recipes down through the generations….

The husband walked into the kitchen just as his wife was preparing a roast for dinner. His wife took out the sharp butcher knife and proceeded to cut the ends off both sides of the roast before she put it into the oven. As she was putting the roast into the oven, he asked, “Honey, I notice that you always cut off the ends of the roast. Why do you do that?”

“I don’t know, that was just the way my mother always did it,” she replied.

That evening the wife got to thinking about the question, so she called her mother.

“Hi Mom, I was making a roast today, and as usual, I cut the ends off before I put it into the oven. I do that because that’s the way you taught me. Why did you do that?” she asked.

Her mother replied, “I don’t know, that’s just the way your grandmother always did it.”

So, the wife called her grandmother. “Grandma,” she asked. “Why did you always cut the ends off the roast before you put it into the oven?”

“Oh, that’s easy,” said Grandma. “I never had a pan big enough for the whole roast, so I just cut the ends off to fit!”
