The Wellness of YOU! – # 181 – Take It Easy!

We’re coming up on another holiday that frequently includes eating more than usual with friends and family. This happens around the end of the year more often than it does now, but Easter does have a way of adding on a few pounds if you’re not careful.

The occasional splurge isn’t a bad thing — in fact – it’s a pleasure that none of us want to let get away. What can make your pants fit a lot tighter is overeating. Here’s a few tips to help you have your cake and eat it too.

My number # 1 tip is to slow down!

The reason for this is simple — it takes a while for the signals to reach your brain that you’re full. If you eat too fast, you won’t know you’re full so you continue eating. It isn’t until later that you realize that you’re way too full and the discomfort sets in — right along with a couple of extra potential pounds. Take your time — chew each mouthful — enjoy the flavors of the food — and you’ll feel comfortably full when you’ve had enough.

Tip # 2 — Pay Attention To Your Portion Size!

You don’t have to load your plate to the brim. Take smaller portions. Don’t worry about whether you’ll get enough — there will be more for a second small helping if you’re still hungry after finishing your first plate. I do believe you’ll be surprised, though. If you take smaller portions and eat slowly, you’ll feel comfortably full after that first serving. And, let’s face it, there’s dessert later! You’ll want to leave some room.

The lesson for holiday eaters? Use a small plate, and choose your fare carefully.

Tip # 3 — Get Plenty of Rest

Traveling — the excitement of being with friends and family — these factors can get in the way of good restful sleep. You tend to stay up later than usual — and when you stay up later, there’s also the tendency to grab those extra snacks at night before you do crawl into bed. There’s also the possibility that you’ll have an extra alcohol drink or two if you stay up later. That’s not a good thing for the waistline. Going to bed on a full stomach is a sure way to put on extra pounds, plus the alcohol before sleeping can get in the way of good sound sleep.

Tip # 4 — Avoid Those Sweet Drinks

The sugary punches — those sweet mixes that are used with alcohol — the sodas — these can all contribute lots of unnecessary calories to your holiday intake — and do so without giving you any nutritional value. All these do is add pounds to your waistline. Of course, the greater risk, especially if consuming sweet drinks becomes a habit, are the risks for type 2 diabetes and other serious ailments that go along with too much sugar in your system.

Try some herbal tea — I drink it and there are some great flavors out there that are very pleasing to the palate.

One of the challenges in today’s world is how to show the children of our world what a healthy body image looks like. There is so much competition from the television and magazines that the kids today aren’t really sure what they should look like, especially if they don’t look like the models on TV.

Those kids who are overweight, and who are trying to shed those extra pounds are certainly taking a positive step towards getting healthy. But, if that desire to lose weight has developed into an eating disorder, then this desire to lose weight has become an unhealthy obsession.

People with eating disorders may become dangerously thin or use extreme measures to lose weight. For instance, people suffering from anorexia practice self-starvation, while people suffering from bulimia participate in a cycle of bingeing followed by purging, typically through self-induced vomiting.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 179 – How’s Your Nutrition?

Sometimes when I sit down to write these articles, I think, “Wow! I’ve been writing health and nutrition articles for this blog for a long time. What can I keep coming up with to keep it interesting?”


That’s kind of where I am this morning. Maybe it’s just because it’s Friday — or maybe I’m just getting a good strong clue that I need to remind us about the basics of nutrition — about what it means to live a balanced and nutritious lifestyle. If you want to be functioning at your best every day, then good nutrition is vital. And remember, nutrition goes beyond just eating right.

The first thing to look into with nutrition is the type of food that you’re taking in. Having a menu plan to get the essential ingredients everyday is the basis of nutrition. This includes the proper amount of vegetables, fruits, meat and dairy products. It’s important to find out what types of foods you should be eating for your body type.

Along with eating the right type of food, you may need to be considering what vitamins and supplements you need to add to your diet every day. The Wellness of YOU! – # 178 – Is It Your Heart?

Would you know for sure if you were having a heart attack? It’s not unusual for a heart attack to go unrecognized.


There was a study done recently saying that 43 percent of heart attacks would not be detected — more often in women than in men. Other studies feel that estimate may be too high — but do concur that the problem exists. We really do need to know the signs and symptoms of a heart attack so we know when to seek help. This is one area where you don’t want to guess wrong.

Dr. Rita Redberg, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said, “People often ignore the warning signs of a heart attack.” Sometimes, it’s a case of denial. Other times, people wrongly write it off as indigestion or stress, she said.

According to the American Heart Association, the warning signs of a heart attack typically include:

* Chest discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and then returns. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
* Discomfort in other areas of the upper body, such as pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
* Shortness of breath, with or without chest discomfort.
* A cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

Women are more likely than men to experience such symptoms as shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

Dutch researchers reported the finding that 43 percent of heart attacks are unrecognized in a study published earlier this year in the European Heart Journal. They analyzed the electrocardiographs (ECGs) of more than 4,000 men and women over age 55, all participants in the so-called Rotterdam Study.

The researchers gave the men and women a baseline ECG screening during the years 1990 to 1993, then repeated the ECGs during either 1994 to 1995, or 1997 to 2000. The imaging tests revealed that over 4 out of 10 heart attacks went unrecognized — including one-third of attacks in men and more than one-half in women, the study said.

The researchers think the results could apply to any developed country.

Dr. Susan Bennett, director of George Washington University Hospital’s Women’s Heart program, said even a doctor may not recognize a heart attack, especially in women. “Physicians typically under-evaluate and under-treat women,” she said.

A special report published last year in the journal Circulation polled 500 physicians online, including primary-care doctors, obstetricians/gynecologists and cardiologists. They were given an experimental case study and asked to categorize the patient’s level of heart-disease risk. The authors found that women at intermediate risk were more likely to be assigned to a lower-risk category than men with identical risk profiles.

Bennett said the decision to evaluate a patient for a possible heart attack depends on the “index of suspicion.” And often, that suspicion is not high enough for women, she said. “When they [doctors] see a woman who is white, on the thinner side, they get that reflex that this is a lower-risk person,” she said.

Among the important things we need to know are our blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Keeping a healthy diet, a healthy weight and partaking in regular exercise is also vital. Also, be sure to get a thorough physical examination at least once a year, especially if you are age 55 or older.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 177 – Your Belly — Your Heart

A couple of months ago I was in the local shopping mall doing some “people-watching” and I began to notice a disturbing similarity among the people I was seeing.


I know you’ve probably seen this same similarity — from the back, these folks look fine — they don’t appear to be overweight — they don’t have much of any love handles — but the noticeable thing is how their bellies seem to protrude out of proportion to the rest of their bodies. I also noticed that this seemed to be more predominate with men than with women.

I’m not writing about this to point fingers at anyone or to make light of this, but rather to help you understand that there’s a serious health risk with this body shape. There is so much being written these days — and there have been so many studies done — all showing that the more your belly sticks out the greater your risk of developing heart disease. In fact, most studies now show that the fat you have in your abdomen is more important to your overall health than your total weight.

Not too long ago there was an Oprah Show with Doctor Oz that talked about this problem of weight in the belly and its connection to heart disease. There was also a study done at Kaiser Permanente of Northern California where they measured the abdominal diameter (the distance from the back to the upper abdomen, midway between the top of the pelvis and the bottom of the ribs) of 101,765 men and women. They then followed the subjects for about 12 years.

Results of the study indicated that the men with the largest abdominal diameters were 42 percent more likely to develop heart disease as compared to those with the smallest. The increased risk for women with the largest diameters was 44 percent. The researchers noted an increase in risk even when these subjects were of normal weight.

If you, or someone you know, is carrying excess weight in their belly, you need to be more aware of the fact that they are at greater risk for developing heart disease. These folks need to begin, right away, to make better food and lifestyle choices. They need to avoid sweets and high-glycemic carbohydrates. They should also increase their intake of foods that contain omego-3 fatty acids. This is found in naturally raised meats, fish (especially salmon), fish oil, etc.

In addition to staying away from sweets and empty carbs, they need to avoid those foods that are high in omega-6 fatty acids — this would include fried foods, most of the vegetable oils, etc. In North America, the balance between the omega-3 and the omega-6 is way off. We should be getting more omega-3 and a lot less omega-6.

The other thing that can be done to help get rid of that extra belly-fat is to do some high-intensity exercise at least several times a week. Brisk walking, biking, running (if you can) are some examples. Also, adding in some weight bearing exercise is always a good idea.
