If you watch any TV at all, then you’ve undoubtedly seen plenty of ads for diet pills — those magic little tablets that promise to remove those pounds of embarrassing flesh from all those places on our bodies. You’ve all seen the “Before” and “After” pictures, right?

Looks great — but are they safe? Can they really burn fat off our bodies? Before you get on a diet of diet pills, you need to ask these same, inportant questions. A diet pill is designed to be an anti-obesity drug. They’re not designed as a method of weight loss — and they certainly don’t burn fat.

What some of them can do is suppress your appetite — but that alone won’t make you lose weight. Most people who can’t lose weight have this problem because they don’t eat right and they don’t get enough exercise. A most important point about diet pills — or any weight loss program — is to consult with your medical professional first. Weight loss programs have to be based on a person’s age, height, weight, and their overall physical condition and medical history.

Sure, a doctor may prescribe a diet pill, but they will also include a regimen of a low-fat, low-sugar, low-calorie diet, and regular exercise. A pill will only be one component of the total program. And also, remember that taking any diet pill without consulting your doctor is a prescription for trouble. Many diet pills can produce some unhealthy side effects.

If you’re having a problem with keeping your weight under control — and you’re tempted to try one of the many diet pills talked about in the advertisements, be sure to use good sense and talk to your doctor first. A diet pill is not a magic bullet.

Thanks for watching the video. Now, let’s talk a little about some of the superfoods that can make you healthier than ever ….

There is more and more research coming out to prove that certain foods may prevent or treat health conditions — everything from heart disease to eye problems.

No one particular food is a magic bullet against disease. Simply consuming a grapefruit or a handful of broccoli florets every day won’t cut it. But eating a wide variety of foods like fatty fish, dark green or bright-colored fruits and vegetables, nuts, beans and high-fiber, whole-grain breads and cereals certainly will greatly improve the odds of having better overall health.

Vegetable Soup

Vegetable soup can boost protective antioxidants and guard against the ravages of substances that damage cells. Try to find soups that include a variety of vegetables. One good example would be gazpacho — aka “the liquid salad” — this soup is loaded with tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers and onions, plus olive oil, which can help lower levels of LDL, the “bad” cholesterol. Gazpacho has lots of Vitamin C as well as other antioxidants.

Got Milk?

Researchers are discovering that low-fat dairy products may help to protect against type 2 diabetes. Men who drank two to three cups of low-fat or nonfat milk per day were 20 percent less likely to develop the disease, according to a Harvard University 12-year follow-up study of 41,200 men published last year in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

An Apple-a-Day

The antioxidants in apples could help protect the brain from the type of damage that triggers Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, according to laboratory research with animals.

Chang Y. Lee of Cornell University’s Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, N.Y., estimates that on average Americans eat only one-seventh of an apple per day, not nearly enough. There is “a good reason to say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” says Lee, who reported on the study in the Journal of Food Science.

Ohhh, Chocolate!

Good dark chocolate (eaten in moderation — there’s a lot of fat and sugar in chocolate, you know) is good for you. There has been plenty of research to show that dark chocolate can lower your blood pressure. There is also something in the cocoa that will help to stop a cough.

How About Some Wine With That Chocolate?

Red wine may reduce the risk of developing cataracts, according to the Reykjavik (Iceland) Eye Study.

Among the 832 participants, those who drank moderate amounts of red wine (from two glasses per month to two or three glasses per day) had about half the risk of developing cataracts as nondrinkers, beer drinkers and heavy drinkers. White wine was not included in the analysis. The findings were reported last year at a meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Vitamin B-12

Bones need more than calcium to keep them strong. A new study of more than 2,500 men and women links low blood levels of vitamin B-12 to low bone mineral density in men. It also confirms similar findings reported in women. A deficiency of B-12 raises the risk of osteoporosis.

The vitamin is found in meat, dairy products and eggs. The body’s ability to absorb vitamin B-12 from food decreases with age, but people over 50 can get it in fortified cereals and from supplements.

Get More Fiber

Oats, soy products, whole grain breads, beans, tofu, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, especially almonds, , dark-green salads, brown rice, will do wonders to help you get your cholesterol levels down.

Thanks for watching the video. Now, let’s talk a little about how to fight the common cold…

It won’t be long before winter is on the way out, but you may still get hit with a cold. If you’re coughing and sneezing, experiencing a stuffy or runny nose, and a sore throat, chances are you’ve contracted one of the 200-plus viruses that cause the common cold. It seems like everyone gets a cold from time to time and, unfortunately, there is no magic cure.

One of the most simple and effective ways to prevent getting a cold is
regular hand washing. You really need to get into this habit - especially if you’ve been in contact with someone who is coughing or sneezing, or if you’ve handled objects like a shopping cart or a hand rail. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. If you do get a cold, it will usually clear up in seven to 10 days. In the meantime, you can take steps to manage your symptoms and make life a little more bearable.

Here are a few tips:

* Drink plenty of fluids. Water is the obvious choice, but other sugar-free beverages — and even a clear consommé or broth — will keep you hydrated, too. In addition, hot herbal tea may soothe a sore throat.

* Choose a medication in pill or sugar-free liquid form. Pills do not contain a significant amount of added sugars, and sugar-free cough drops or cough syrup are available at most pharmacies. These products are commonly made for diabetics; if you can’t find them, ask your pharmacist where they’re stocked. (Keep in mind that they may contain sugar alcohols, which can cause gastro-intestinal distress in some people.) Also remember that antibiotics are not effective against the common cold — or other viruses — so don’t get folled into spending extra money for them.

* Get plenty of rest. Allowing your body proper time to rest — seven to nine hours per night for most adults — and even more for kids — will help ensure a speedy recovery. And, unless your doctor says otherwise (or if you have a fever), if you’re feeling up to engaging in your usual exercise routine, there is no medical reason to skip it.
