The Wellness of YOU! - # 173 - Soy Products — Good or Bad?

Today we’re going to continue with our discussion about soy products. If you didn’t get a chance to read Monday’s article, you might want to jump back and give that a read before you go on to today’s article. We were talking about some of the myths surrounding the eating of soy.


Another myth is that using soy formula could harm a baby’s development.

This goes back to the same isoflavone argument that we talked about yesterday. If you think about the fact that some 20 million infants have been fed soy-based formula since the 1960s — and based on a study published in the Journal of American Medical Association — there were no major health differences on the men and women studied who were fed either soy or milk formula when they were infants.

What do doctors recommend today?

First, breastfeed if at all possible, for as long as possible — ideally until your child is one year old.

If that’s not possible and you have to use soy or dairy-based formula, don’t beat yourself up about it. If there are any risks, they are likely to be very small. Hopefully, continuing research will shed more light on this question.

Another question has to do with soy and the thyroid.

Well, a recent review of the research published in the journal, “Thyroid”, found no significant effects of soy on the thyroid gland except in people who were iodine deficient — something that is quite rare in this country.

We should not focus too much of our diet on soy - anymore than we should be eating too much of one food over another. The soy we do eat should be the natural soy products like, miso, tempeh, tofu, soy milk, and edamame (young soybeans in the pod). Just one or two servings a day are fine. I know, for myself, I use soy milk on my whole grain cereal every morning.

It would be better to avoid some of the genetically engineered soyfoods like, soy supplements, soy cheese, soy ice cream and soy burgers. These may have some unhealthy fats and compounds in them that we don’t know enough about.

Good human studies about soy are limited. Those we do know about suggest that soy may help to lower cholesterol, prevent cancer, increase bone density, protect the kidneys of people with diabetes, and relieve menopausal symptoms like hot flashes.

If you don’t like soy foods, then substitute things like olive oil, fish oil, nuts and seeds.

Thanks for watching the video. Now, let’s talk a little about Eating Soy Products ….

There is so much being said about soy in the news lately. One of the things you’ll hear is that eating soy will do you in, for good!

Well, you need to know that’s true — IF — and this is a BIG IF — IF you are a mouse — and you have no ovaries — and you have no immune system — and you’re eating highly processed soy extracts in mega doses that humans were never meant to eat.

Scan some media reports and surf the Internet, however, and you’re bound to come across scary claims like:

- Soy will give you breast cancer…
- Soy formula is dangerous to babies…
- Genetically modified soy foods may modify you…
- Soy foods block your thyroid function…
- Soy prevents the absorption of minerals and blocks
digestion…
- Tofu causes Alzheimer’s disease.

On the other hand, you may also have heard:

- Broccoli has natural pesticides that will kill you…
- Grapefruit contains naringenin, a potent compound that can
have toxic interactions with medications…
- Celery contains toxins that damage the immune system…
- Spinach contains oxalates that bind calcium and prevent
calcium absorption…
- Mushrooms contain toxic compounds that cause cancer…

With mixed messages like these, no wonder so many of us are confused!

So what’s the story here — well, there’s some good news and some bad news.

From what I’ve discovered after digging into this a bit, soy may not be the be-all and end-all that we were led to think - and — it’s also not as awful as the latest media reports would have you believe. There is a detailed report from the Agency for HealthCare Research and Quality called, “The Effects of Soy on Health Outcomes” at (www.ahrq.gov) that came to this conclusion: There is no evidence of significant benefit or harm based on the quality of evidence that exists today.

So what are you going to do? My recommendation is not to panic. MOst of the studies that are behind the media reports involve consumption of soy in much higher doses than any of us would ever consume. I mean, how many of us are going to eat a pound of tofu or drink three soy protein shakes every day? We just don’t eat that way. These studies just aren’t based on what normal people would do.

Let’s take some of the myths apart … We’ll look at one of these today, and I’ll discuss some of the others in the next posting on Wednesday.

One of the myths is that eating soy will cause breast cancer, because soy foods contain some natural plant compounds (isoflavones) that may work in humans like hormones. So there are some people who think that these isoflavones could increase hormonally driven conditions like breast cancer.

That doesn’t seem to hold true according to research findings. It actually looks like it’s the other way around.

- All population studies (studies of groups of people) of soy either show reduced breast cancer risk or no effect at all, one way or the other.

- The only studies to show increased cancer risk are on mice with no ovaries or damaged immune systems and who eat high amounts of processed soy.

- Studies in mice WITH ovaries and functioning immune systems show reduced tumor growth.

- Mice studies may not reflect the effect of soy on humans.

- High breast tissue density is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. Breast tissue density increases with estrogen replacement, but decreases with isoflavone consumption in postmenopausal women. That’s not bad — that’s good.

- Eating soy foods at an early age (childhood and the teen years) appears to have a significant protective effect against breast cancer.

If you really want to reduce your risk of breast cancer, drink less alcohol and eat fewer trans and saturated fats - those two things that are so prominent in our diets in America can do considerable harm.

Thanks for watching the video. Now, let’s talk a little about EATING DISORDERS ….

I don’t know what prompted me to want to write about this today — maybe it was a radio program that was on the public radio station this morning. Maybe it’s just seeing the pressures our society puts on people about being thin. We have the peer pressures, fast food availability, cultural practices — all focusing on our body weight and making us feel that the only way to beauty is to be thin.

Is it any wonder that our kids develop such awful eating habits? So many children are either over eating or eating way too little. And the type of foods they choose to eat only exacerbate the dangers of developing an eating disorder. And, in most cases, with younger people, we are allowing them to make food choices when they don’t have a clue what constitutes good nutrition. We’ve shirked our responsibility as parents and guardians.

Eating disorders can be very dangerous — but we also need to recognize that they are treatable. The most common types of eating disorders are bulimia and anorexia nervosa. Many of these disorders develop in adolescence, although there are cases where younger children and older adults may also be diagnosed.

It’s not uncommon for an eating disorder to coincide with other psychiatric disorders such as anxiety or depression. Those who suffer with eating disorders are also likely to experience a number of physical health problems such as heart conditions or kidney failure. Conditions such as these can become serious enough to lead to death. So it’s essential to recognise and treat an eating disorder as soon as possible.

The most common of these disorders is anorexia nervosa. It’s estimated that between 0.5% and 3.7% of females have anorexia nervosa at some time during their lifetime. In the early stages, this is often not easy to diagnose because the person suffering will use several devious methods to hide it. However, there are ways to help you recognize it. If you see….

– A desire to maintain a body weight that is below normal for their age and height.
– Evidence of fear of getting fat even though they are obviously thin.
– Evidence of a distorted opinion of what is a healthy body shape or weight.
– Menstrual periods that may become irregular or cease altogether (in females who have reached puberty).
– That eating becomes a focus in their lives — an obsession with avoiding meals or eating certain foods in very small quantities.
– That the individual begins to measure and weigh their food.
– That they begin to compulsively exercise.
– Them vomiting or using laxatives, diuretics or enemas.

If you spot any of these signs or symptoms in someone you live with, it is vital that you seek help as soon as possible.
