This blog is now devoted to the posting of my Memoir/Novel called, Lost and Found. I'll be posting it in a serialized fashion -- a new Chapter each week. I call it a 'Memoir/Novel' because it is the true story of my youth, but I've changed all names, including my own. There is a Table of Contents in the left sidebar. Just click the links to read from the beginning or to read any part you may have missed. There is a "New Chapter Notice Form" on the right. Just leave your first name and email address and I'll let you know directly when there's a new chapter posted. I'd also love to hear your comments.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 158 – Blood Pressure – Meditation

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

Since we’ve been talking about good ways to help reduce high blood pressure, one way that has always had great effects is to practice meditation. There are so many great health benefits from meditation — it only makes sense to take a good look at it — and to add it to your lifestyle changes.

In this article, I’m going to recommend a tool that I use every day to help me achieve deep states of meditation. This is an amazing technology that helps to overcome some of the primary difficulties so many experience when meditating. If you’ve ever tried meditation and have found that you just couldn’t get into a deeper place in your mind, then this is the solution for you.

Read on. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to use the link below (where it says, “Got Questions” to get in touch with me. Using what I recommend here can bring you amazing health benefits — and many other benefits for your life.

Here are a few recent news items that reinforce the idea that this is good for you.

* An article published in the American Heart Association journal, “Stroke”, recently reported that meditation can reduce cholesterol buildup and the associated risk of heart attack and stroke.

* And another study of the elderly found that meditation actually
added years to their lives.

* The National Institute of Health reports that regular meditation reduces
chronic pain, anxiety, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and
cortisol (sometimes called “the stress hormone”) production.

* A University of Wisconsin-Madison study discovered
meditation boosts brain function and the immune system.

* A recent issue of the American Journal of Hypertension featured the
results of a study showing a significant lowering of blood pressure in a
group of meditators compared to a control group of people who didn’t meditate.

The study also reported a 23% decrease in usage of antihypertensive drugs
between the group of meditators and the other group.

* A Harvard study also concluded that regular meditation can reduce pain,
lower blood pressure, and cut production of the stress hormone, cortisol.

* The most recent study by The American Heart Association shows heart
and artery health improved 69 percent in test groups practicing meditation.

And this is just the beginning.

Practically every time you turn around there’s another study documenting and
supporting fantastic health and wellness benefits of meditation.

So, what’s the quickest way to actually achieve these amazing benefits?

If there’s a downside to meditation it’s this… Traditional meditation can take
years, even decades to master.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 157 – Blood Pressure – Lower It With Food

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

This article is aimed at those of you who are having some difficulties with high blood pressure — and also for those of you who just want to avoid ever getting it.

One of the best ways to help lower your blood pressure and to avoid it to begin with is to pay close attention to what you’re eating. Please don’t use this article as an excuse to stop taking any medications that have been prescribed by your doctor. Always make sure you’re checking with your doctor before making any changes to your normal diet.

In a previous article I mentioned the use of garlic as one of the foods that can help you lower your blood pressure. Onions also fit into that same category.

Fruits and vegetables, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, are a huge factor in helping to keep those pressures down. Oranges, apples, grapes, bananas, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, etc., can really help. These will also give you some extra vitamin C which is positive, as well. And don’t forget to have some salmon or tuna at least twice a week. You need that Omega-3 to fight hypertension.

Have some low-fat yogurt in your cereal in the morning. If you like cheese, stay with the no-fat or low-fat variety. The same goes for cottage cheese and sour cream — stay with those brands that offer low-fat or no-fat. Any dairy products that you include in your diet need to be of the lower fat types.

Definitely watch your alcohol intake. Cut way back on this. Excess alcohol, especially on a daily basis is a sure way to keep your blood pressure high. Moderation is the key here.

Be sure to watch the salt intake also. Keep those sodium levels between low and moderate. Read the labels of the food you buy.

Eat meat that has less fat. With poultry, take the white meat without the skin. It would be best to avoid red meats as much as possible, and if you do eat red meat, be sure to pick cuts that are lean. Also, eggs — you should try to avoid the egg yolks and stay with the whites, instead. There’s a lot of cholesterol in those egg yolks. The egg substitutes are great alternative.

Getting onto a healthy, nutritious diet is a smart move for everyone, and especially for those suffering from high blood pressure. You’ll feel better, you could be extending your life span, and you get to lose weight as a bonus.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 156 – Blood Pressure – Home Remedies

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

There are a variety of things you can do to take care of yourself at home, that may also help to lower your blood pressure. Again, to repeat, high blood pressure is something that needs to be taken seriously, so the things I mention in this article should not be construed as something you should do without first talking to your doctor about it.

With that in mind, one of the most important things that you can do at home is to get on a good low-fat, low-sugar, low-salt diet. There are a multitude of good sources for how to do this on every bookshelf in most every store and also on the internet. If you spend some time and read through many of the articles that I’ve written here in this blog, you’ll get plenty of information about how to have a healthy, nutritious diet.

There is one thing I have mentioned briefly in another article, that bears repeating when we’re talking about blood pressure — and that is garlic. Not only is this a great blood pressure reducer, it also has the properties that will help to reduce blood clots. Some researchers also think garlic is capable of reducing the triglyceride levels in addition to lowering the blood pressure in an individual. Don’t worry about the smell it can leave on your breath, just include it in your meals when you’re staying home, and also pick up some of those garlic pills — they won’t give you bad breath. Be careful here, don’t put the garlic in a lot of high-fat meals — that won’t work. Stay low-fat! It’s vital that you do this.

You should also be sure to include things like bananas, kidney beans, molasses and soy in your diet as these are high in potassium and magnesium. Fruits such as grapes and watermelon are also good sources of potassium and magnesium, but they also contain calcium, all of which are great for reducing blood pressure.

Do consult your doctor if you want to follow any of the advice above. Make sure you get the okay before you make any changes like this. Also, if your doctor has prescribed some medications for you, don’t ever stop taking those without making sure the doctor says it’s okay to do so.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 155 – Blood Pressure – Dangers

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

Today’s article will focus on some of the dangers of high blood pressure — and there are many.

If you, or anyone among your family members or friends has high blood pressure, it’s vitally important that you, and they, understand what these dangers are.

One of the things we need to look at are what other diseases are present along with the hypertension. What other ailments are presenting themselves because of the high blood pressure?

The blood vessels are an important place to look. For example, the blood vessels that supply the eyes can be affected by hypertension and can have profound consequences on someone’s eyesight.

Obviously, cardiac problems may also be associated with high blood pressure. High blood pressure may cause disruptions in the cardiac blood flow to the arteries. The measurement of blood pressure can show a clear indication that the heart has to work much harder to pump blood through the arteries when one has hypertension. That fact can lead to many other difficulties relating to the cardiac area, such as heart attack, stroke and blood clots.

There can also be difficulties in the nervous system such as convulsions, impaired coherence and other symptoms that are often associated with old age.

When the flow of blood in our bodies is disturbed it can affect many of our organs. There are numerous instances reported of ulcers, and other gastro-intestinal problems being prevalent in people with high blood pressure.

The point today, as in the previous articles, is to be sure to regularly measure your blood pressure. This is one of those instances where not knowing can hurt you.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 154 – Blood Pressure – Symptoms and Risks

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

Moving right along with our series of articles about blood pressure. Today let’s go over, in more detail, some of the symptoms and risks of high blood pressure.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects about 80 million Americans. That’s a pretty drastic statistic, when you realize that this disease is the leading cause of heart attack and stroke. When you break that figure down it translates to around one of every four Americans have this disease. It’s actually a little more than that, because as I mentioned before, there are many people who don’t know they have high blood pressure.

This is one of the reasons why I decided to write these articles. I know there are a lot of people who read this blog, and it’s vital that more people become aware. Medical practitioners, especially cardiologists, are alarmed by the increasing mortality rates connected to hypertension, and are stressing the importance of regularly checking blood pressure. Not only will this help to keep people from getting into the dangerous stages, it could also help people to make the lifestyle changes needed to avoid high blood pressure altogether.

Regular monitoring is the only sure way to determine if you have high blood pressure. The usual symptoms — headaches, dizziness, and nosebleeds — are generally associated with other things, and most people just write it off as stress. Some people with mild cases of high blood pressure or hypertension will feel a dull ache or pain as well as numbness at the back of the neck when they wake up in the morning. Other symptoms include: Excessive perspiration; muscle cramps; weakness; frequent urination and rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations). There may also be chest pains or tightness near the heart, nausea, swelling of the legs and even memory loss. Again, a multitude of ailments that people tend to associate with other things.

So, learn how to take your own blood pressure. It’s not hard, and with the new digital monitors available today, it has become easier than ever. This is not a case where, “If you don’t know, it won’t hurt you” — it will. This is a “need to know” situation — and monitoring is the best way to know. Don’t think it can’t happen to you — it can happen to anybody.

Hypertension is not caused by a virus or a bacteria. It’s essentially a lifestyle problem, and that’s the reason why it tends to be ignored. People don’t like to change their lifestyle. The people most at risk are those who don’t get much in the way of physical exercise — who eat a diet rich in bad fats, especially animal fats — those who are addicted to sugar and other high cholesterol foods — those who eat foods with a lot of salt — and those who drink too much alcohol.

Your age can also be a factor. As you get older, your risk increases. That’s because your metabolism slows down and your body doesn’t process fats and cholesterol as quickly as it did when you were younger. Men are more likely to get high blood pressure between the ages of 35 and 50 than women, although women will usually be at greater risk after menopause.

Your family history is also a risk factor. If members of your family have had a problem with blood pressure and cholesterol, then you need to be checking yourself carefully. If you are someone who doesn’t get much exercise, check with your doctor and see what sort of program you can handle. Don’t go off on your own as too much exercise can exacerbate this condition. Follow your doctors advice and get in the habit of checking your own blood pressure. Start doing it today.
