The Wellness of YOU! - # 163 - Emotional Eating

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

How often do you find yourself reaching for some food when you feel stressed? How often do you want something to eat because you think it will make you more comfortable? How about when you’re feeling sad, or anxious, or bored, or angry, or lonely? Do those things make you want to eat something?

Well, if that’s you, you’re definitely not alone. This is called emotional eating — and it’s one of the major causes of the weight problem we’re facing. Emotional eating can be cured. It’s really nothing more than a habit that we’ve formed, maybe as early in our lives as when we were children. One way to break this habit is to work on our own self-esteem — but that topic is better suited to my other blog, where I talk about ways to improve our lives and feel better about ourselves. Stop by and check it out at: http://www.theleaderinside.com.

So, let’s look at some ways to break the emotional eating habit …

* Learn to recognize your actual hunger level. Just before you pop into your mouth whatever it is you just grabbed, rate how hungry you really are. Give it a rating between 1 and 5 — with 1 being absolutely ravenous and 5 not being truly hungry at all. Be honest with yourself. Then, if your rating is a 4 or a 5, put the food back where you found it — you’re not truly hungry and don’t need the food.

* Do something other than eat. Make a list of things you like to do and could easily do besides eating. Maybe it’s to go for a walk — maybe it’s call a good friend — maybe it’s start a project around the house — how about a nice hot shower — or perhaps clean up the email folders. Just do something on your list besides eat.

* Keep track of what you’re eating. Lots of people who are working on weight loss keep a food journal. Put down not only what you eat, but what time you ate it and how you were feeling when you ate it. This will help you to be more aware of your eating habits and you’ll be more accountable.

* Run some interference. I read about this technique in a magazine article some time ago. When you get that urge to grab some food, make a deal with yourself to only eat three specific healthy foods before you grab something that’s high in calories or full of fat. These could be things like an apple, a handful of baby carrots, some nuts, a cup of yogurt — things like that. Take your time eating these three food items. Then, after you’ve done that, and you still feel like you want something else, give yourself permission to have one of your comfort foods. You’ll find that most of the time you’ll be satisfied with the three foods you already ate.

* Exercise, exercise, exercise every day. One thing I know, and can attest to, is that if you exercise every day you’ll feel better. If you feel good, you’re not as likely to get down in the dumps. And, if you’re not down in the dumps, you’re not likely to need to resort to comfort foods to make you feel better — you already feel great!

* Get enough sleep and get it at the same time every day. Research shows that sleep deprivation can increase hunger by decreasing Leptin levels, the appetite regulating hormone that signals fullness. Not only that, but getting regular, restful sleep every night will give you more energy. When you have more energy it will be a lot easier for you to stay focused on positive things in your life — and when you feel good — you won’t feel like you have to look to food to make you happy.

Dear Friends,

Last evening (January 23rd) I had the good fortune to be on a phone conversation with Neale Donald Walsch. What an inspiring interview this was with this best-selling author of the “Conversations With God” series of books. Maybe you’ve heard about him or his books. I’ll bet many of you have.

Neale Donald Walsch never wanted his life story to become a movie — but now it has — and it will be the featured film in the February 2007 DVD for the members of the Spiritual Cinema Circle, of which I am one. I encourage you to join me and become a member today so that you can have this wonderful film to keep and to share with your family and friends — CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD.

(Today is the last day of January, so be sure to join during the month of February so you can have this wonderful movie to enjoy and share. And, the first month of your membership is free — postage only! So, do it today!)

Neale Donald Walsch didn’t “ask” to write a book, let alone have a movie made about his life. He certainly had no intention of writing 22 books, or becoming the New York Times best-selling author of the “Conversations with God” series. Neale Donald Walsch was just a man down on his luck, out of answers, and in desperate need of help, who cried out to God.

And God answered.

In what became a series of late night “conversations,” God revealed himself to Neale in an utterly earth shattering way. Walsch posed an endless stream of questions about life’s mysteries and uncertainties, and just like that, God illuminated the answers, one by one, to all of Walsch’s desperate cries. Walsch filled dozens and dozens of legal pads recording these conversations, and their messages became the basis for an internationally acclaimed book series that has sold over 7 million copies and been translated into 34 languages, and now –— a major feature film — CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD.

CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD is an original production of The Spiritual Cinema Circle, a DVD club that delivers inspiring and uplifting films – features, shorts, and documentaries – directly to your door. The Circle finds fascinating films from festivals around the world…films that will open your heart, stir your soul, and expand your mind.

Now, members of The Circle are receiving CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD. as part of the February 2007 DVD which also includes three outstanding short films. For a limited time, new subscribers to The Circle can receive a free trial membership (you pay a minimal shipping fee) by visiting: http://www.spiritualcinemacircle.com/.

If there ever was a great time to do this, it’s today.

Shanti,

Ron
