The Wellness of YOU! - # 159 - Blood Pressure - What Are You Eating?

Whether you are someone who has high blood pressure — or are someone who would just like to avoid it — then this article is for you. In America, we have an epidemic of people with hypertension — and people who are overweight or obese — and these are both life-threatening issues. It’s way past time that we take control of what we’re doing to ourselves.

One of the best ways to do this is to begin to take control of what we’re eating. Yes, what we eat — our so-called “American Diet” — is what’s killing us. We are eating huge quantities of foods that are high in saturated fats and trans fats — and we are lying to ourselves by saying, “It’s okay, it won’t hurt us!” It will hurt us — and it IS hurting us. It’s time to stop! It’s not only high blood pressure and obesity — it’s also about what you’re doing to your heart, your liver, and your kidneys.
Go through your cupboards and refrigerators today and throw out the whole milk mozzarella cheese, the whole milk american cheese, the whole milk ricotta cheese, the whole milk anything! Stop consuming pizza and other pastas loaded with these whole milk products. Stop consuming cuts of meat that are loaded with fat.
Salt is another culprit. Start paying attention to labels on food. All labels will tell you the amount of sodium in the product. Stay well under the 1000 to 1500 mg of sodium per day.
Be careful of the oils you add to your food — and also the oils that are used in so many of the fast-food places. That order of fries can be just the thing that takes you over the edge. The only healthy oils that I know of are olive oil and canola oil. All the rest are awful — get them out of your diet.
Start eating healthy snacks like a handful of peanuts — some fresh fruit — or some nice fresh raw veggies. Stay away from the salty chips and fried foods. And also, stay away from the power-drinks and sodas. They are filled with things that will raise your blood pressure and will add pounds to your weight.
Another thing that will help you to stay healthier is to cut down on the quantity of food you eat. We are a “super-size” country. The healthiest way to eat is to eat five or six small meals each day. If you can’t fit that into your life, then cut way back on the amount of food you put on your plate — even go so far as to use smaller plates.
The last thing I’ll mention today is caffeine. Caffeine raises your blood pressure — end of sentence.
