This blog is devoted to things on my mind. I may post often -- or -- I may not post for a couple of weeks. The content will be varied and this blog is not designed for search engines. It's just for us folks. Enjoy, and come back often. I'd also encourage your comments. Peace!

The Wellness of YOU! - # 150 - Holiday Drinking

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

No! I am not someone who is going to say to you, “Don’t drink during the holidays”. I will say, “Don’t drink and drive — please, don’t ever do that”. I heard this new slogan that I hope you’ll keep in mind — “Buzz Driving IS Drunk Driving!” Please be careful!

If you’re like me and want to keep your weight under control during this time of year, then you need to pay attention to what you’re drinking. Let’s face it, the holidays without eggnog, Christmas punch, wine, and champagne may be a bit hard to imagine for some of you. The good news is that you don’t have to give these up in order to stay healthy.

Here’s a list of some of the more common alcoholic beverages and some notes on how they should be consumed if you’re watching your diet and your health.

Alcohols that are okay alone or in mixed drinks:

Vodka, Rum, Gin, Whiskey, Scotch, Bourbon, Tequila, Wine (preferably red wine)

Note: Replace sweetened mixers, sweetened juices and sodas with their sugar-free counterparts.

Alcohols that are OK with some modifications:

Eggnog — Replace cream with skim milk or fat-free half-and-half and replace sugar with Splenda.

Champagne — Enjoy a glass or two of the extra-brut variety over the holidays.

Christmas Punch — Make it with sugar-free powdered drink mixes and extra-brut champagne.

Alcohols that should generally be avoided:

Dessert Wines, Flavored Liqueurs, Wine Coolers (Also, stay away from those energy drinks — they’re loaded with sugar and caffeine)

Note: If you choose to drink, drink in moderation and make sure you do so during or right after a meal, since a stomach full of food will slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream — and keep your blood-sugar levels steadier.

Have a wonderful, Happy New Year!!
