The Wellness of YOU! - # 142 - Another Inconvenient Truth-Continued

If you read this blog on Friday, you’ll know that we were discussing the “Inconvenient Truth” about our healthcare system here in the America. We talked about how our healthcare system seems to be so devoted to profits that we are ignoring the methods of prevention that could turn this around.


I promised that today I’d talk about some of the changes we could make to help you and your family to find better health and to get off the cycle of sickness that seems to prevail.

(1) Eat real, whole foods.

(2) Eat organic foods that are locally grown whenever it’s possible. Sure, they may cost a few pennies more — but how much value do you place on your life and the lives of those you care about?

(3) Get the processed and packaged foods out of your diets. Buy fresh food instead.

(4) If you drink sodas or other sugar-laden drinks — give them up today. If enough people would cease this awful addiction, I’d be willing to bet that the makers of these products would develop healthier things for us to drink. Take back control.

(5) Try the opposite of “fast” food and start eating more “slow” food. What’s “slow” food, you ask? It’s about making meals from scratch. In fact, I’ll also bet that if we stop giving our hard-earned dollars to the “fast” food industry, that there will be a resurgence of “slow” food restaurants. (You probably have to be closer to my own age in order to remember what those were like.)

(6) Avoid most of the foods you see advertised in commercials. Try to keep children from seeing so many food commercials on TV. (The junk food industry thrives on these. They spend $13 billion a year on advertising junk food to our children. I saw a statistic today that estimates kids see 10,000 junk food commercials a year.)

(7) Get in the habit of reading labels before you buy food. Avoid foods with trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, with more than five ingredients, or that show a bunch of ingredients you don’t recognize.

(8) When you can walk somewhere rather than drive, do it!

(9) If you do need to see your doctor for an ailment, ask that s/he help you to correct the problem rather than throwing another pill at it.

(10) Write to your congressperson and demand that the government hold independent scientific hearings on nutrition and health and then demand they put those findings into public policy.

(11) Don’t be shy about talking up good health and nutrition habits to your friends and colleagues. Enlist their help in divising new ways to make it more profitable for our society to be healthy rather than sick.

Just as Al Gore’s movie is a wake-up call for our environment, I hope you’ll see these blog posts as a call to action for your health. Our world is getting sicker, but it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s about choices.
