The Wellness of YOU! - # 134 - Is It the Flu?

Yes, it’s that time of year again — the annual flu season. The time of year when we have to take steps to avoid getting caught by the flu virus.

One of the first steps to take if you think you have the flu, is to try to determine if it really is the flu — or if it’s a common cold. Once you’ve determined that fact, then it will become a little easier to fight it off and get back to normal life.
The flu is usually worse than a cold. It doesn’t come on over a period of time, but it takes over your body rather quickly. Its symptoms are more severe than those of a cold, and it will usually last longer than a cold. Most often the flu will include coughing, fever, stuffy or runny nose, and bodily aches. It’s also possible you may feel some nausea. If you know that you have the flu, you can take several steps to begin to get over the symptoms.
Remember that the flu can lead to worse problems. Getting the proper treatment is vital to avoid the most commonly associated problem, pneumonia. If you do get the flu, and you get the proper treatment, you will be immune to it for this current virus season.
One way to combat the flu is with over-the-counter medications. These usually have a variety of ingredients in them to help you to get over the symptoms more rapidly. These products may include things to reduce pain and fever, help you to stop coughing, thin out mucus and reduce any congestion that is built up in your body.
Another way to prevent getting the flu is to get a flu vaccine. If you get the vaccine at the right time (as the flu season is starting), you greatly improve your chances of not getting the flu at all. You will need to get the vaccine each year, because the flu virus changes from year to year. If you are interested in receiving this vaccine, you’ll need to check with your medical professional to determine if it is the right path for you to take.
If you are more interested in holistic remedies, there are several things that you can take. Eucalyptus is known to help in treating the flu. Echinacea is another substance that is used widely for both the flu and colds. Black elderberry may also be helpful, both by itself and with a tea. By investigating into holistic remedies, you can find a cure that is right for you in combating the flu.
And, of course, taking good care of yourself nutritionally is an excellent way to help strengthen your immune system to ward off a flu attack — or, at least,to make the flu symptoms less severe.
