The Wellness of YOU! - # 133 - Nutrition and Aging

Now that we’ve covered the subject of nutrition for the very young and the teenagers, our next step will be for those that are more in my own age group — those that are getting older.

There’s no question that as we become older, our nutritional needs are going to change. Our bodies are in the process of rebalancing. For example, some areas of our bodies are slowing down — some areas of our bodies are losing their muscle tone — other areas may be losing elasticity — and our bones may be thinning. This is all new and we need to adjust accordingly. What we could get by with nutritionally when we were younger, just won’t work any longer.
We need to learn to accept the fact that if we want to truly enjoy our elder years, we must learn to take care of ourselves. We need to realize that a balanced nutritional program is vital. If we don’t have the right nutrients moving through our bodies the potential for severe health problems is highly accelerated. Our bodies may not be growing as we age, but they are in need of more TLC to keep them healthy.
Some of the major supplements that older and aging people need are calcium, fiber, iron, vitamin C, protein, vitamin A and folic acid. These specific vitamins help with adding the strength and extra energy needed in order to continue moving things consistently through the body. Knowing which supplements you will need to rebalance your body can help you in feeling healthier and more energetic.
As I have done in each of these articles, I am again recommending the vitamin and mineral supplement that I take every day, Body Balance. I credit this product for being able to maintain a reasonably healthy and active lifestyle, despite my age. (See below for more information.)
Physical activity is also a must as we age. And, I can attest to the fact that it doesn’t get easier — but it is vital. As we age we can lose bone density, muscle mass, and develop a variety of aches and pains that we’ve never experienced before. However, the answer to this is consistent exercise — no matter how hard it is to get started and stay with it. I can attest to the fact that the more consistent you are — the easier it gets.
There is another thing to keep in mind with this ageing process — and that is that some of our senses will also age. Some of us may see some loss in hearing and eyesight. I know I’ve had to have cataracts removed from both my eyes. It’s also possible that smell and taste could deteriorate. There are several specialists that can help you to feel comfortable and give you the right tools if this starts to happen. You can always change food flavors that you eat in order to help with smell and taste. It’s important to make sure that the change in your senses doesn’t get in the way of your normal and comfortable living.
As the years pile up, be sure to be aware of the fact that you’ll need to make adjustments in your nutrition and exercise routines. While your body is going to naturally age and the functions in your body will change, you can balance this out by taking care of the different parts of your body and providing yourself with different techniques that will allow you to feel healthy and vital.
