The Wellness of YOU! - # 131 - More on Children’s Nutrition

Children are in a constant growth spurt. Their bodies are continuously changing. If for no other reason, this is why it’s so important to provide them with the best possible nutrition that’s available.

Doesn’t this just make good sense? What children are putting into their bodies while they’re young will have an enormous effect on their health as they go through life. Monitoring a child’s health is essential to their growth. Making sure that you are taking the right measures early on in their lives will ensure that they will be able to function at a higher level and with more nutritional value later on.
It seems so obvious to me that one of the most important things we can do for children is to pay attention to what they’re eating. Sure, that’s a tough situation. Children are exposed to junk food and foods with huge amounts of sugar in them constantly. They see their peers eating this way in school — many schools are still feeding foods that are lacking in good nutrition — the television is bombarding them with commercials that promote terrible food choices — parents are resorting to fast food and junk foods in order to avoid cooking.
Because of this, it is important to balance out their meals. Making sure that they get the right amounts of nutrition each day will benefit them later on in life. This not only includes giving them the proper daily vitamins, but also ensuring that they are eating a wide variety of foods.
Children need large amounts of calcium each day. Their bones and muscles are in a constant state of growth. Calcium can be found in dairy products as well as broccoli. Beyond this, they will also need nutrition from the different types of Vitamin B products, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and folic acid. These will all promote good health as their body is functioning and growing. This will help them to get used to eating healthy later on in life.
Children also need to get exercise. They need to get away from the TVs and computer games. Playing outside and doing other daily physical activities will help them in several ways. Get them to help you with your outdoor chores. This will allow for their heart to grow stronger and will help to build their lung capacity. Getting them outside whenever the weather is favorable is one way to ensure that they are building healthy and strong muscles.
It is vital that parents pay attention to how their children are developing. If you’re noticing that they seem to be too small or too large for their age, then you should take preventative measures to make sure they get back to optimal health.
And, one of the most important factors in your child’s nutritional growth is to be an example for your children. Whether we believe it or not, children do look to the adults in their family as models. They will choose to emulate what you do. When they see that you also take care of your nutritional needs properly, they will imitate that and develop those same habits for themselves.
Take care of yourself so you can take good care of your children.
