This blog is now devoted to the posting of my Memoir/Novel called, Lost and Found. I'll be posting it in a serialized fashion -- a new Chapter each week. I call it a 'Memoir/Novel' because it is the true story of my youth, but I've changed all names, including my own. There is a Table of Contents in the left sidebar. Just click the links to read from the beginning or to read any part you may have missed. There is a "New Chapter Notice Form" on the right. Just leave your first name and email address and I'll let you know directly when there's a new chapter posted. I'd also love to hear your comments.

Be well -- Be in Peace!

The Wellness of YOU! – # 117 – Food Additives

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

When we’re looking at the products we buy in the stores today, we want to be sure that we’re getting food that will fit in with our nutrition and weight loss program. One area that is often overlooked in this process is the variety of additives that are put in our food.

These additives are put there to give the food different flavors, or different colors, to keep them preserved or to make them taste as sweet as possible. It would be wise to learn more about what these are and what effect they might have on your body and your health.

First and foremost, remember that food additives are not natural substances that your body needs for nutrition. In fact, some of them could be real troublemakers for your system.

You can find out what additives have been added to your food by looking at the labels. These will usually be labeled as artificial coloring, preservatives or antioxidants. It would be great if the labels would tell you how much of the additive is included, but that is rarely the case.

Most of the additives today are there for the sake of the manufacturer of the product. They want to give the food item a longer shelf and shipping life and to prevent spoilage when you get the food home. Antioxidants are mostly used to stop oxygen from moving into oils and fats. Such things as flavoring agents, acids, and sweeteners may also be added to the food.

Generally, most food additives won’t cause you any ill effects when you eat them. They are in very low quantities. If, however, you should ever notice that a certain food item doesn’t agree with you, it may be that the additives aren’t good for your system.

Of course, the best way to avoid any difficulty with additives, is to buy your food in its natural state — the fresher the better — and of course, the next best step is to buy organically grown food.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 116 – Flexibility

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

Several of the articles lately have focused on different types of exercise for different purposes. We’ve talked about Pilates, weight lifting, bone health, cardiovascular exercise, etc. Today, let’s talk about flexibility training.

Another way of describing flexibility training is just plain, regular, everyday, ordinary stretching. This is a great way to improve your health and fits in nicely with your nutrition and weight loss program.

So many areas of your general health can be improved with some simple, daily stretches. Your posture will get better — you’ll have less back pain — your joints will be more lubricated and less stiff — and you blood flow which carries nutrients throughout your body will improve dramatically.

Once you begin to stretch out your legs, hips, and lower back muscles, you will begin to see a noticeable change in how you move and stand. It will seem as though a weight has been lifted off your back once you maintain a stretching routine for several days.

Again, and as I remind you with each of these articles, always discuss any new exercise routines with your own medical professional.

Stretching is an integral part of many exercise programs. Of course, whenever you do weight training, or cardiovascular exercise, you should always stretch your muscles both before and after your workout. Stretching is also a primary focus of such programs as yoga, Pilates and aerobics classes.

When you do flexibility training you are teaching your muscles to relax as you train your joints to move with greater ease. Making this a part of your daily nutrition and weight loss program, you will not only exercise more efficiently, you will be more effective in whatever activities are a part of your life.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 115 – Obesity

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

There’s no question that we have a problem in the United States that is directly related to the subject of nutrition and weight loss — and that is the problem of obesity. This exists in every town and city in this country. It is finally reaching the point where people are becoming more aware of it, and are starting to do something about it.

Take a look at the picture I featured today — not the one of me — the one with the french fries. Do you know that french fries are one of the main culprits in our obesity problem today. Add to that, sodas, sugar-laden cereals, candy, potato chips, ice cream, super-sizing, and fast food in general, and you’ll see why we’re in the “shape” we’re in today.

All of our bodies require a certain amount of fat. The average person who is not overweight will have a body mass index between nineteen and twenty-five percent fat. If you are overweight, you will have between twenty-five and thirty percent fat. Of you have more fat than this, you are considered obese. This excess fat has a tendency to start accumulating around the stomach area. Then it will move to the hips and buttocks, and finally to other parts of your body.

How can we fight obesity?

First, we have to look at why we are eating too much of the wrong things. Sometimes it can be genetic — there may be a genetic trait that causes you to want the wrong things to eat. That doesn’t mean you have to eat them, it just may be harder for you to learn to do without them. Our environment is also a reason. Our fast-food lifestyle and super-sizing both at home and in restaurants is a major factor. Being taught from early childhood to eat the kinds of foods that will lead to poor nutrition is another factor. Emotional eating caused by psychological influences is another factor that leads many of us to over-eat.

Once you know why you do it, then you can begin to fight the problem. It is vital that you do, because obesity can lead quickly to severe health problems. You may need help to begin your fight, so don’t hesitate to ask for help from your medical professional.

What needs to happen is a drastic change in lifestyle and mindset. You can reverse the process. Stay tuned to this blog — we’ll be showing you how to live with a good nutrition and weight loss program.

In every one of these blog posts I recommmend that you check out the nutritional supplements that I have used, with amazing results, for years. Using these products has helped me to have much better control over what I eat because they are giving me the strong nutritional base that my body (and yours) needs. I have never found anything that can compare to these products for a sound nutrition and weight loss program. These have helped me more than I would have ever imagined. I’m not kidding! The Wellness of YOU! – # 114 – More About Exercise

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

Whenever we talk about a top-notch nutrition and weight loss program, we have to always include exercise as part of that program. Exercise is a vital way to balance out an entire program of eating right, losing weight, and increasing our energy levels.

As you know, there are several forms of exercise that fit into a good program.

We talked about one of these forms a few days ago — cardiovascular exercise. The primary purpose of cardiovascular exercise is to get your heart pumping at a higher rate for a given amount of time. When you increase your heart rate you will burn off more energy (calories). The longer you do this, the more energy you’ll use up. When you burn more calories than you have readily available, you will begin to burn fat that has been stored in your body.

Cardiovascular exercises may include walking, running, swimming, aerobic exercises, bike riding, skating, and skiing. This type of exercise should be done regularly, 4 or 5 times per week, and for at least 30 minutes each time. Even if you don’t need to lose weight this is a great way to stay in shape. As always, be sure to check with your medical professional before embarking on any new exercise program.

Another form of exercise that is needed in your nutrition and weight loss program is called resistance training, or weight lifting. People always think of resistance training as “pumping iron” — but it can include other forms of resistance where you use your own muscles working against each other. This form of exercise will also burn energy (calories). The fat that may be burned off with resistance training will usually be around the muscles that you are exercising. For example, if you’re lifting weights with your legs, you will likely burn fat that is stored around your thighs or buttocks, while also increasing your muscle mass in that area.

One thing that people tend to omit when they exercise is to stretch out your muscles both before and after you exercise. This will help to avoid pain and strain on cold muscles.

In every one of these blog posts I recommmend that you check out the nutritional supplements that I have used, with amazing results, for years. I have never found anything that can compare to these products for a sound nutrition and weight loss program. These have helped me more than I would have ever imagined. I’m not kidding! The Wellness of YOU! – # 113 – Bone Health

May I have a word with you?

If you were here recently, then you’ve heard this audio. The article for today is below. If you haven’t heard the audio, then ….

… Are your speakers turned on?

… Volume turned up? Good, now press the Play button.

Just how important is bone health, or bone density, anyway? Is this something you should be thinking about in your own nutrition and weight loss program? How does nutrition play into this?

These are all good questions.

Age is a factor when we talk about bone health — although — age wouldn’t be so much of a factor if we took care of our bones while we were young.

The primary indicators of poor bone health are osteoporosis and arthritis. These are the result of the weakening and thinning of the bones.

One of the first things to foster good bone health is to be sure that we are getting adequate amounts of calcium in our diet. You could take a calcium supplement (see my recommendation below), or be sure you eat plenty of calcium-rich foods such as milk, cheese, yogurt, greens, broccoli, sardines, canned salmon with bones, dried beans and peas, and tofu.

There are also some good exercises that you can do to promote good bone health. Things such as basketball, soccer, baseball, tennis, aerobics, dancing and walking are good strength training cardiovascular exercises that can help with your bone density. Weight lifting is also a proven source to help with your bone health. Doing things like yoga or tai chi can also be helpful as these rely on balance and flexibility, which in turn, can help to prevent falls or other injuries that could damage your bones.

Here is some information about the nutritional supplements I add to my nutrition and weight loss program. There is an excellent calcium product among these that I highly recommend, and that I take every day. These have helped me more than I would have ever imagined. I’m not kidding. I urge you to click on the links in the box below — you won’t be sorry!

You can find out more about the supplements that I take and highly recommend by looking at these pages:
