The Wellness of YOU! - # 86 - Obesity (continued)
Welcome back after the weekend. We were overwhelmed here with the workload of moving and digging out from under a pile of boxes which needed to be unpacked. This is pretty good activity for the weight loss part of a nutrition and weight loss program. When you’re eating on the run, and then being physcially active for many hours of the day, the weight drops off nicely.
However, enough of that — let’s get back to our topic that we started last week —- Obesity and being overweight.

Consider these statistics:
- One billion people in the world are obese.
- 65% of Americans are now overweight, up 18% since just 1994.
- 30% of Americans are obese, up 30% since 1994.
- Diabetes is now an epidemic in children.
- Over 40% of Americans have high cholesterol.
- 50% of Americans over 65 have high blood pressure; 28.7% of all Americans have high blood pressure.
- 5.1% of us have type 2 diabetes, a staggering 104% increase from 1980 to 2004.
- Over 100 million Americans have metabolic syndrome, a risk factor for heart disease.
- 92% of Americans are deficient in one or more essential vitamins and minerals.
Those numbers are shocking. And we’re literally spending TRILLIONS of dollars to cope with these problems:
- Americans spend $117 billion annually to treat obesity- linked diseases including heart disease, diabetes, dementia, cancer, and arthritis.
- Over $50 billion is spent on weight loss alone.
- Of the $1.9 trillion spent on healthcare, just 2% is spent on prevention.
- Since 2000 the cost of health insurance has skyrocketed 59% while wages have increased a meager 12%.
- Medicaid expenditures will balloon an estimated 8.9% a year from 2002 to 2012 with Medicare rising by 6.7% per year over the same period.
- And not surprisingly, healthcare costs have exploded by 250% since 1990, from $717 billion to $1.9 trillion in 2004.
Clearly, something’s not working. So what — or who — is to blame?
Be sure to stop back here tomorrow or the next day and we’ll continue with this article and try to come up with some answers that make sense.

I would love to hear from you. One of the advantages of using a blog to communicate is the fact that it’s not a one-way medium. At the end of each article there is a link where you can comment about what you’ve read. It’s a great way to exchange thoughts and ideas. |
As always, remember to follow a good-fat — good-carb diet. And do whatever you can, within your doctors recommendations, to keep up with the exercise part of your program. The benefits are priceless.
