This blog is devoted to things on my mind. I may post often -- or -- I may not post for a couple of weeks. The content will be varied and this blog is not designed for search engines. It's just for us folks. Enjoy, and come back often. I'd also encourage your comments. Peace!

The Wellness of YOU! - # 85 - Obesity

Over the past couple of days I’ve been hearing and reading more about the health crisis here in North America. This crisis is getting to be a major obstacle to the success of a person’s nutrition and weight loss program.

I’m talking about the crisis of obesity and being overweight. Yes, those are two different things, but both are equally important when it comes to our health and overall wellness.

Have you ever wondered why it seems so hard to lose weight when you go on a diet?

And, how many of you have gone on a diet and ended up adding back more weight than you lost?

It’s not surprising! Staying slim and trim in this country is becoming a huge challenge. We know the United States is growing — but the sad thing is — so are Americans! We’re bigger now than we have ever been. Two-thirds of us are overweight or obese.

In fact, try this little exercise the next time you go out to the mall or anywhere else where there are a lot of people.

Look at the people — look at their bodies — how many of them are carrying too much weight? I’ll bet the majority of them are. And the even sadder thing is that we are so used to seeing overweight or obese people that is beginning to seem normal. We’re so used to seeing it we don’t even notice anymore.

Well, I’ve got news for you — normal doesn’t mean healthy! It should not be this way!

Over the past 100 years or so, the average lifespan of the American increased. We had improvements in science and medicine all designed to help us live longer. But something has changed — we are gaining weight at remarkable levels and our life expectancy is now, after all those years of increasing — is now decreasing!

Think about this — if we don’t do something to turn this around our children and grandchildren will live sicker and die younger than we will!

That’s where I’m going to stop this article. I’ll pick it up again the first of the week.

I hope you’ll think hard about that last statement — not only as it applies to your children and grandchildren, but to your sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends — and also to YOU!

We have to turn this around — our lives depend on it.

I would love to hear from you. One of the advantages of using a blog to communicate is the fact that it’s not a one-way medium. At the end of each article there is a link where you can comment about what you’ve read. It’s a great way to exchange thoughts and ideas.
