This blog is going to change it's focus. I'm going to be posting my Memoir/Novel called, Lost and Found, in a serialized fashion. I call it a 'Memoir/Novel' because it is the true story of my youth, but I've changed all names, including my own. There is a Table of Contents in the left sidebar. Just click the links to read from the beginning or to read any part you may have missed. I have added a New Chapter Notice Form on the right. Just leave your first name and email address and I'll let you know directly when there's a new chapter. I'd also love to hear your comments.

Be well -- Be in Peace!

The Wellness of YOU! – # 81 – Exercise

Nutrition and Weight Loss

To continue with our discussion about the basics of nutrition that we wrote about a couple of days ago ….

Although it isn’t often thought of in the same breath as nutrition, it is a definite part of both nutrition and weight loss, and that is exercise.

When we speak about exercise, we are including both cardio and resistance training.

Cardio workouts are based around increasing your heart rate for a given amount of time each day. This will help to keep the inner functioning of your body balanced and will also help you maintain the energy levels you need to accomplish what you need to do everyday.

Resistance training, on the other hand, is used to tone and build muscles. By using resistance training, you will also be increasing bone density and warding off osteoporosis.

There are several different types of exercises that can help with your nutrition and weight loss goals. Try different types of routines to help you stay lean and toned, maintain flexibility and balance, build muscle and strength, plus build overall endurance. If you go to a gym for your exercise, talk to the physical trainers there to help you choose the types of exercise best suited for these routines.

Following the guidelines of these articles will help you to get healthy and stay healthy. Once you have a clear understanding of what is good to eat, what sort of exercises work best for you, and have a good knowledge of the right kind of vitamins and supplements to include in your nutrition program, you’ll be on the path to a wonderfully, healthy lifestyle.

Be sure not to get caught in the trap of fad diets and/or diet pills. These can throw you off your goals faster than anything and deprive your body of what it really needs to stay fit and healthy.

That will be it for today — I’ll be back soon with some more information to help you with your nutrition and weight loss program. I’m not promising that I’ll be writing every day. We are in the throes of moving and that is taking an exorbitant amount of time — time that is away from the computer. We’re hoping to be back to a more normal routine by early June. So, I hope you’ll bear with me.

The Wellness of YOU! – #80 – Nutrition Basics

Nutrition and Weight Loss

Over these past months, we have talked about our nutrition and weight loss program and goals in great detail. We’ve covered a variety of specifics relating to food, exercise, and personal discipline.

Today I would like to offer an article that deals with some of the basics of nutrition.

There are several things to keep in mind when you’re looking to have a balanced and nutritious lifestyle. Nutrition is one of the main ingredients that will allow you to function to your fullest capacity every day.

Nutrition goes beyond just eating right. There are several essential factors to keep in mind in relation to nutrition.

When you’re talking about nutrition, the first thing you should look at is the type of food that you’re putting into your body. You want to be sure that you’re getting the essential ingredients everyday. This includes the right amount of vegetables, fruits, meat and dairy products. It’s also important to find out what types of foods you should be eating for your particular body type.

Along with taking in the right types of foods, you should also be considering what additional vitamins and supplements you should be including in your diet. No matter how careful you are with your food choices, there are still bound to be gaps in your nutritional needs. There are several safe and effective types of vitamins and supplements that you can take that will help you with your needs and also allow for a balanced lifestyle.

Here is some information about the nutritional supplements I add to my nutrition and weight loss program. These have helped me more than I would have ever imagined. I’m not kidding. Click on the links in the box below — you won’t be sorry! It’s well worth checking out.

The Wellness of YOU! – # 79 – Urban Myth

Nutrition and Weight Loss

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of emails (or some have been forwarded to me) alleging that Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Walter Reed Army Medical Center have released reports warning consumers not to heat food in plastic containers in microwave ovens and not to freeze drinks in plastic bottles. These “reports” ostensibly state that cancer causing chemicals are released into the food/drink from the plastic when it is microwaved or frozen.

Okay, I know this is way off topic for nutrition and weight loss, but it definitely pertains to your good health. I hope you’ll excuse this little side-trip.

According to the experts at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, these messages are completely untrue and are what have come to be known as “urban myths” or “urban legends.” No connection has been made between plastic containers and food safety, and no reports alleging such a connection have been issued by any medical or research institution.

The purpose in getting this blog posting to my readers is to ask you to be extremely skeptical when you receive email messages purporting to reveal jaw-dropping cancer-related “information.” If it is genuine news, you can bet it will be the lead story on the evening network news shows and the front-page story with a banner headline in the newspaper.

The best way to determine whether one of these messages is true or false is to go straight to the source. I was able to find out everything I needed to know about the plastic food container story by typing some keywords from the messages (“cancer,” “plastic food containers,” “microwave,” and “Johns Hopkins”) into my internet browser and clicking on “Search.”

Do be careful, however, and read the product labels when microwaving with plastic wrap and plastic containers.

The real reason?

You could end up with a melted mess in your marinara sauce because some plastics just can’t stand the heat!

By the way, here’s a link where you, too, can learn some truth …

The Wellness of YOU! – # 78 – Tomatoes

Nutrition and Weight Loss

So far in this series of articles about “healing foods” we’ve covered whole grains, black or Bing cherries, yogurt, salmon, cabbage, walnuts, blueberries and beans. Today we’ll cover another of the “healing foods” so that you will be able to move forward with your nutrition and weight loss program with confidence.

Today it’s all about Tomatoes!! Read on to see why tomatoes are also an important part of the list of “healing foods”.

One of the main aspects of the tomato in our discussion of “healing foods” is it’s ability to reduce a man’s risk of prostate cancer by up to 35 percent. This is something that scientists have know for years. Not only is this a darn good reason for men to eat tomatoes regularly, but the news gets even better.

More recently, studies have shown that men who already have prostate cancer may benefit as well. When researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago fed one serving of pasta with tomato sauce every day for three weeks to 32 men who were scheduled for prostate surgery, the levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the patients’ blood dropped by nearly 20 percent. (PSA is a measure of prostate-cancer-cell activity, so the lower the level, the less active the cancer cells.)

So what’s in tomatoes that makes them so great?

It is likely that the active ingredient is lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that is thought to also be protective against lung and stomach cancers.

A rather interesting twist to all this has been brought to light recently. It appears that fresh tomatoes aren’t as protective as cooked tomatoes, for some reason.

With that in mind, men with prostate cancer should try to eat some cooked tomatoes every day. You could get them in soups, chili, marinara and spaghetti sauces, or other dishes.

For the men who are wanting to help protect themselves against prostate cancer, and for women who would like to protect themselves against other cancers, such as lung and stomach cancers, you should enjoy a good tomato dish twice a week.

That will be it for today — I’ll be back soon with some more information to help you with your nutrition and weight loss program.

I would love to hear from you. One of the advantages of using a blog to communicate is the fact that it’s not a one-way medium. At the end of each article there is a link where you can comment about what you’ve read. It’s a great way to exchange thoughts and ideas.
